The reason we've had to settle when hiring coaches isn't due to poor in-state talent, a lack of resources, or because people think we have irrational fans. The reason is because we, for reasons I can't understand, have been waiting until the last possible minute to make changes. While other programs make changes when they aren't satisfied with the results, we wait until we have a complete dumpster fire on our hands. Qualified coaches look at Tennessee and see a historically top 10-15 program where competent coaches can have real success, but are obviously going to be put off by the fact that the roster is in such bad shape.

And that's why we settle. The coaches we should be targeting pass because they know their resume is good enough to wait for a different offer. An offer that, while likely comparable in terms of money and opportunity, provides them a far greater chance to win early. The coaches we end up hiring are the coaches like Derek Dooley and Butch Jones. In other words, the coaches who know nothing better is ever coming for them.

With all that being said, I realize that Butch isn't going anywhere. The people in power allowed Dave Hart to give Butch an insane, unearned buyout, and then made no plans to replace Hart until after this season, effectively leaving us with no option but to sit back and watch as a perfectly predictable scenario unfolds. So those of you who don't want to see Butch go (whether you actually still believe in Butch, are delusional enough to think we just need a new offensive coordinator, or are simply scared of change), there's no need to worry. Hopefully it makes you feel better when the losses start piling up.

Yep, you are 100% correct. When/if Butch gets fired it will be when we are a complete train wreck.

I wish we would go back to the pro style offense. Who ever the coach is. It would help the O-line, we would get big time WRs, RBs, QBs. I mean its worked for Alabama for the last few years.

Lets just see how the season plays out. what if we see amazing improvement in the last few games? I promise the coaching staff is aware of everyones concerns. if were sitting at 6-2 right now no-one would be having these conversations. funny how one game changes the entire football program and legacy? You think Ohio State was giving up hope after losing to PSU? what if Sumlin was fired after 2 5-0 starts? just give it time there is more than what meets the eye

We always see "improvement" in our last few games. That is why we always think we are back during the offseason.

I don't think Jones will ever change his offensive philosophy. That's why i don't think firing Deboring will make a lot of difference. What we have seen so far this year would get a guy canned at most top programs. It's been sloppy, both on the field and on the sidelines. The injuries haven't helped, but it started right out of the gate. Jones owns this year.

A coach on the proverbial hot seat can't recruit effectively.. We have witnessed the great coaching the "Best staff in America" puts out.. I cringe thinking of how it will look with guys we're fighting Mac schools for.

So what's your point? Is Dave Hart gone yet? Do you think Butch should be fired before Dave Hart is replaced? Should I hope that we continue to lose? Should I want us to win out?

I'm simply saying that the longer we wait to make coaching changes that are clearly needed, the more we limit ourselves when looking for a replacement.

Alabama is not running a pro style offense. They are running a spread power rushing offense.

Jones has another year everyone knows that. If he doesn't win out, he's going to be on the hot seat for next year. I don't think that's ever good, but i believe that to be the case. If we don't see better play this team has another loss or two in them. That puts more charcoal under the fire for next year. He's created this deal, now he's going to have to put out the flames...

Both Fulmer and Dooley were let go early enough to have adequate choices. The problem IMO was that Tennessee took a chance on Kiffin and got burned - he left in the middle of the night and he caused other issues - Tennessee is very lucky to have not ended on probation.

But I do have a question - if a coach needs a roster of good players to even consider the job - is that coach really a good coach? That tells me that the coach is not able or willing to build or sustain a program over any length of time. And more than likely said coach is just using UT (as Kiffin was) as a stepping stone to someplace else. And at the first sign of unrest, they will be gone because they are not able to deal with the adversity that comes with building and sustaining success in a program.

If a coach needs a stacked roster to consider UT, he is looking for a free ride to success and $$$s.

OK and NB fans had the same attitude, and that may have been resolved - Auburn, too. On the other hand a lot of fans thought Charlie Strong would have fixed everything here - ask the other UT about that. Richt could be asking GA fans "Miss me, yet?" Coaching change is messy, and historically doesn't work as well as impatient "fans" want. Many times when a new coach comes in and wins, it is on the back of the previous coach who built something but didn't get to show it to a "what have you done for me lately" fan base.

Dooley was a rare situation. He clearly was an awful coach, but it's hard to fire a guy after two years. He left behind a disaster.

All this and the fact they want to pay about half of what the top programs are paying the best coaches
