For those throwing the DB's under the bus...

Don't understand the mindset of throwing the players under the bus but it is "hands off" for the head coach. Those players are VOLS. The coach is just a mercenary. Is there one VOL on the coaching staff?

yes,i know of one a Mr Terry Fair,he was a kick ass player for the Vols, I think he is a GA,wasn't he from the 98 team ?

In a base 4-3, I was always taught that the linebackers are typically the playmakers. In the last three games, we've been pushed back, and allowed centers and guards off the line of scrimmage way too easily.

Frankly, the DE's have not held up their end of the bargain either.

the whole d line has got there ass kicked and kicked often and hard, they can't get off blocks worth a damn,i thought there should have been a lot of improvements this year for them

Yep.

On run plays the DLine should maintain formation and spacing. If the DLine is pushed back, goes around the O player or loses containment it opens gaps allowing OLine to penetrate and engage our LB's.

Due to injuries, couch's ineligibility, and other reasons our defensive lineman are having to play TOO MANY plays per game. There is not enough in rotation. They have lost their legs the last two games. Let's hope the bye week has allowed them to get them back.

Not defending them, I too have been sorely disappointed in some of the DL play. Big Dan, its time to man up and find that tackling fuel.

GO VOLS lets close them DORES !!!

Good post.
Lack of depth (not just DLine) cannot be overstated.

Isn't that what these message boards are for, throwing the players and position groups under the bus? Oh, and don't forget the coaches. It is our right as Vol fans to debase and degrade our players and coaches. The DBS shouldn't be any different than any other position groups.

i have forgotten about the lack of depth, which has been slim at best

I thought that too but they aren't last in passes defended and are really only 1 per game from being mid-pack. Completion % is good. Most INT's came against lesser opponents but is still meaningful.

They are low mid-pack in yd's per attempt... but again not at the bottom.

what does it mean ? at times they are good ? they do look killer at times, even though it is few and far between, the CBs and safteys have looked good at tim es,but they have a tendency to leave it wide open over the middle

Outside of Coleman most of our DB's are underclassmen. McNeil is have a sophomore slump but will be better next year. Our D-line is horrible and our LB's are slow but I agree our DL is the bigger problem. I wish Salisbury didn't get hurt and Vereen was ready to be a full-time stater. Our defense will be A-lot better next year not only will the LB's be faster but we will have a better pass rush.

McNeil has been recruited over, read TKJr and McDowell , and will only provide depth next year imo. Need senior to be Coleman to either improve substantially or be moved out of the way. Agree with everything else.

This is my one major complaint with Jones personally. Saulsberry should play more... he's simply a better player any time he's in. I would even suspect you could slide Walls or Miller inside and get more than they're getting from McCullers. I see now why Bama passed on him.

You do realize Trevarris Saulsberry has been hurt almost all year, and has played in only one game since getting injured after the first three, right? But, by all means, keep complaining.

This. I get where you're coming from with the lack of DL production SJ but I don't think Jones can really be blamed for not playing an injured guy.

do you really think that 1 player would make that big of a difference ? depth is needed across the board

Convince me they don't deserve it. McCullers has been just short of useless for the last few games.

Here is something we agree on. The DL hasn't been getting a push up front at all and the allows the last 3 teams we have played to pick up apart and in some cases run over and around us.

McCullers doesn't have a killer instinct. Big j 98 wanted to kill. That's what made him so great.

We need a Leonard Little or Al Wilson that threw a chair almost at someone in 97 SEC championship game at halftime, and that was to his teammates. Look at his leadership and killer instinct and how "crazy" he was BUT he was all SEC and do not think he was All American, but he was a special player they have NONE of those... we need one on the OL and one on DL or LB

3rd in completion % allowed.... 3rd in INT's... 6th in QB rating...

Not bad for a bunch of guys who are too slow and have no talent.

The whole defense deserves it. About the INT's though, 10 against APU, WKU, USA. Jacques Smith has as many INT's as the DB's in the last 5 games.

Our Scout team DB's are faster than the ones playing and I think it's crappy that they don't get to at least dress out the last home game. They really work harder than anyone.

The WKY game definitely has to skewer the pass defense stats some along with Auburn going '95 Cornhusker on us.

I am more worried about points given up then rush defense more so than the actual pass defense.

It's not necessarily a bad thing to have a team throwing a lot against you and playing from behind.

Honestly, it helps when all they have to do is run...

Auburn only passed 7 times.....of course that stat will go down for us. Haha

They're improved from last year though.

it sucked that they didn't have to throw the ball at all,i especially hate it for Mr Hood, that man has been threw a load of bad crap for a long while, best wishes to him and all the seniors on this team

.... UT is currently first in the SEC against the SEC in avg yds allowed passing. Considering the last two opponents, they should finish there.

Granted the back 7 have not been great in run support and teams have sometimes not passed because they didn't have to.... but those guys have NOT been the main problem on D. Edit: UT is tied for 4th lowest number of pass attempts against them with UF. Bama, USCe, and UK have defended fewer passes. LSU and Ark avg only about one more.

Jones told the truth when he said the D would go as McCullers went... and Big Dan has very often stunk it up. The DL... not the DB's or even the "slow" LB's are the big problem with this D.

Florida, Missouri 2nd team qb's.

Georgia - Gurley was out, Marshal Injured did not return to game, lost Bennet and Wesley, and all left a game they were in control of, so did not really have to worry about the run game and 2 of their top receivers

I don't think Alabama even threw the ball after midway through the third quarter.

Auburn had over 400 yards rushing, Attempted less than 10 passes.

They played good against SC.

If this secondary was as talented as you want us to believe, then they should be number 1 in the SEC in all pass defense statistical categories. after playing 2 backup QB'S, a Georgia team whose offense was decimated with injuries, and an Auburn team who only attempted less then 10 passes.
