There's bad calls and there's ignoring the rules. The refs will get hammered more for not following the rule book than they will for missing a call.
The ref ruled him down which was in incredibly bad call. Once that happened, the play was over. It's non review-able because you can't always know what would have happened if the play were allowed to continue. This particular case it probably wouldn't have changed anything. In others, it could have had a huge effect.
They won't change the rule that you can't review whether a play should have been called dead or not. To do so would cause players to continue playing after the whistle because of the "what if" the whistle is overruled by the replay official. A player could get hurt if he drops his guard because of the whistle and another who continues playing levels him.
I'm glad the media also states that his knee never touched the ground and the play shouldn't have been called dead. The touchdown would have happened if the official let the play continue. This doesn't change the fact that it was incorrect of the officials to overturn the ruling when it's not allowed.
It doesn't make anyone less of a fan if they recognize and acknowledge the errors that occurred, but apparently everyone who states the truth will be labeled a troll or accused of being a Vandy fan in disguise.
I know I rarely post. But I've been reading this board along with others for a long time. i would have been extremely mad if Tennessee had lost because of the error, but I'm not going to claim that the touchdown should have stood. I am truly surprised that the fans here are either ignorant of the rules or simply don't care.
Feel free to make accusations about my loyalties. I know I've been a Vol fan for longer than the majority on this board. No accusations or insults will change that fact.
There is an old saying, that two wrongs don't make a rihgt. No question the whislte was wrong. But does then deliberately ignoring another rule make things right? That's a tough question.
Ref Conversation:
Head Ref to linesman: Hey Dumba** did you blow your whistle?
LM (looking at the Jumbotron): Uhh nope sure didn't and let's get the he!! out of here.
Head ref: Good enough for me....
Blowing the whistle, is what caused the controversy. At game speed, from the angle the ref had, it may very well have appeared the knee was down. All that matters is the play was reviewed and gotten right, even though the review did break the current review rules. I assure everyone if the situation were reversed, every Vol fan alive would be as upset as Franklin and Vandy if not more so. We finally got the benefit, of a game ending call ... be happy and have a nice day.![]()
I can not think of his name, but the ref who used to be a TE for Vandy that hates us must have told that ref to fill in for him since he was not there.:whistling:
I truly don't understand the contoversy. Nothing during that last play should have triggered the ref blowing the whistle. The knee wasn't down, there was no stop in forward progress. The Vandys coach needs to worry more about his QB throwing to the opposing team than trying to stir up some make believe story about a play needing to be blown dead for little to no reason.
You guys are pathetic. If Tennessee had lost the game on the same call, you'd be irate. You are hypocritical women if you say one word about Dooley beating LSU or UNC except for bad calls. You better never mention those games again. Bad calls happen. We are 1-2 on game ending bad calls. Stop lying to yourselves. It's okay to support your team without living in a state of blind denial.

Worst call I ever saw was the ball hitting a Florida receiver in the chest and falling right thru his arms and they called it a touchdown! Too bad we didn't have reviews then!
Theres no bigger Vol fan on the planet than I. Im also a HS football official. When the whistle blew, the play was over. Whether EG's knee was down or not, the play was over, sorry. Im glad we caught a break, and chances are we would have won anyway, but when the whistle blows the play is over, simple as that. I was sitting in the upper level and of course did not hear a whistle, heard one on the replay.

Or just a dishonest person who thinks the truth is a relative concept that can be stretched to benefit your agenda.
The whistle was blown. At that second, the play was over. It's true the official missed the call, but lying about the whistle is/was reprehensible. Tennessee should have gotten the ball on Vandy's 25. Basically the lesson the officials sent to everyone watching was that if you make a mistake, do something else wrong to make up for it.
Last year ESPN had a segment about the worst call of the year, and it was the debacle at the Music City Bowl. There were 8 missed calls that resulted in UNC being handed the victory. If any team deserved a missed call to go in their favor, it was UT. But lets not bury our heads in the sand. The correct application of the rules would have given us the ball on Vandy's 25 with a very shaky kicker.
