I mean I don’t expect miracles but this was Carolina. They had been absolutely terrible offensively all year. We stopped them once in 10 possessions. I’ve said give Banks time but I can’t see him being the guy at this point. You don’t have that kind of defensive meltdown and keep your job imo.

It's definitely hard to figure how it could all go so bad even for a weak defense. Something had to be going on to create that kind of performance. By the middle of the 2nd quarter I just wanted them to start dropping 8 into coverage to at least force SC to throw underneath. That was as bad as it gets.

I mean Vandy fields a more competitive defense. Talent excuse just doesn’t wash for me in that performance. If this had been close of course I’m upset but that’s the worst pass defense I’ve seen by a Vol team and that’s saying something considering Sunseri was a DC at one point.

Muschamp, Durkin, Odom, Arnett, Mason. Probably could get at least one of those options or someone better.

Coach will have to make the call what the mix in the root cause of all of those stats are more coaching centric or more player centric. Then factor in the impact on the solution path to replace either or both of the coaches taking the biggest hit on this upcoming class. Not an overly simplistic dilemma to deal with. Right now we have a half dozen early targets committed and they have projected their future based on the first two levels of the current staff. Can't count on FR to come in and get it done, but some might, so if we sacrifice a priority in this class then we extend the recovery process YET another year, UNLESS the replacement coaches have some guys that would portal in. How will all the players view the change? Coach has all the facts and a job to do.

Defense hasn’t consistently stopped teams all year, especially in competitive games. SC was not a good look and Rattler played the best game of his career. Some of the third down SC completions were perfectly thrown balls with our guys defending well as you can expect. But overall it’s a lack of talent more than coaching in the Secondary. If we had anyone capable, I would hope Hadden would have been benched for running his mouth on every play. Even we he got burned!

Heupel's attempt to hire a DC when Heupel was hired was a struggle. Good DCs are not interested in coaching defense with Heupel's offensive system. Its too up tempo and DCs have little time between series to coach players or make adjustments before having to run back on the field. Banks was a default hire because he could not get anyone else. So to replace Banks, look for someone else without a strong resume.

Heupel will not get a DC with a strong resume or one that has shown great success. He has to take a chance on someone..

Agreed. Best DC we had since Chief. Pretty much everyone else we had after Fulmer was fired was horrible, but Wilcox was pragmatic and could work with the talent he had and make adjustments. Defense showed good improvement during his last year. By the way if someone told me we could ever hire someone worse than Sunseri I would have thought impossible - but Banks proved that wrong.

Even Doug Matthews said the scheme could be better. I just don't get how we stayed in that same 4 down linemen and let them throw into the holes in the zone all night. The worst part is in zone you shouldn't be giving that much cushion away, because you usually have help over the top. I don't get it. Our corners are timid, then try to talk trash after getting burnt like toast. At least get a PI out of the deal. The pitch and catch deal was frustrating especially considering we suck tackling.

And still sucks. He did when he was here before and still does now. Now he recruits pretty good, but we need someone that can teach DB’s for certain. I want a DB in the receivers face and check oh I’m hard at the LOS. That would help a ton in itself.
