Please realize that every program has ups and downs. We are down right now but it's nothing new. Some of you are positive that TN football will never rise again. You are wrong!!!! Here's some numbers:

1900-1911: only won .425% of our games
That's 12 long years of losing!

1958-1964: only won .457% of our games
That's 7 long years of losing!

1973-1982: only won .542% of our games
That's 10 long years of losing! I was here to witness it and it sucked!

On the flip side......

1926-1934: winning .864% of the games
That's 9 years of whipping ass!!

1938-1946: winning .787% of the games
That's 9 years of doing it again!!

1993-1999: winning .835% of the games
Most of us here at VN were blessed with this streak to enjoy!!!

Lately.............

2002-2009: won .621% of the time which is not nearly as bad as the first steaks I posted
2005-2009: only won .563% of the time
This is the start of a horrible stretch that is not over yet. If history means anything it will last a few more years. We have been through worse stretches than this in the past.

See a trend?? Up and down we go. We were on top looking down just a little over a decade ago. Now we look up from the basement. The end is not here!!!!!!! We will dominate again, and when we do please don't take it for granted like many of us did in the 90's!! We griped about losing 2 games per year back then and only being in the top 10 instead of the top 5 most of the time! How stupid that looks now from this point of view!!!!!

GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was trying to put something together last night about the cycles sports programs go through.
I got lazy.
Thanks for doing the research.
Great Post

Great research! Most on here are spoiled. Dooley & Co. will get it turned around. Patience is the key. I like what I am seeing even though it has not been with W's.

GO VOLS!!

Glad a thread like this came up. Here's my two cents...
Talked to my dad immediately after the game. He's 73 and been following the vols since way before many volnationers were born. At 34 I might be able to say the same thing to a certain extent.

Anyhow, he is very excited about dooley and the fight he saw in our players tonight. If we can momentarily step aay from our instant gratification/ x-box mentalities there can be seen plenty of reasons to be optimistic about not only our current squad but the future of the program as well.

I agree with the point, but using wins and losses from the 1900's?

And actually, the 1900's were the first time Tennessee ever appeared in a poll. They were ranked 19th in the 1903 final poll by the New York Sun.

Sorry for the random fact. Just thought it'd be a good time to use it.

C'mon man! I wanna see the suck-tis-tics for Sa' Karlina and Vandy. Those would make grown men cower in mortal fear, I imagine.

Great points by all above...

Sweet we're coming back up, I just hate that our down year streaks are longer than our up ones.

We are going to be OK with Dooley. These losses hurt but realistically we shouldnt even be in these games. We have way too many holes. But Dooley seems to have a steady hand, and from watching our team last year (which we had far more to work with) and watching Kiffin's new USC team this year, we are much better off. Lane Kiffin is a lot of things and a football coach is not one of them.

Great post. Everything in this world goes through cycles, including football. It is a proven fact that nothing ever stays the same. It is constantly going through change. Sometimes it is improving and sometimes it is getting worse. No football program ever stays on top forever.

I prefer our position over Georgia's. We're young, been through the sh*t and are looking forward, they've got a coach that's probably been there long enough, stocked with talent but seem to be sliding towards mediocrity. We might just be witnessing the shifting of the cycle where we'll move into their spot in the East and begin pulling top talent out of Georgia again. Georgia's looking at another 8-4 at best and with a new AD, anything could happen.

Yeah, I also haven't read that the program is dead. For all the tribulations and issues, if UT had an average FBS-level QB, they could easily be 2-1 right now and on the way to an 8-4 or 9-3 season. I've been pleasantly surprised by almost everything (minus Simmssucks).

This is one of the best and most mature posts I've read. Thanks for sharing this with us!
