We've had some large payouts as well

Derek Dooley, Tennessee

Fired: Nov. 18, 2012
Total buyout: $5 million
Payments remaining: $104,167

When the Volunteers dismissed Dooley after a four-OT loss to Missouri at home, they were in the midst of an expensive period. The school was completing a $45-million renovation of its practice facility, and had just come off of paying Philip Fulmer a nearly $4-million buyout. At the time of his firing, Dooley was the sixth-highest paid coach in the nation.

Am I reading this right? Only one more payment to Dools? If so, great news.

I think that article was poorly structured/written. IIRC, we're paying Dooley $104K a month for about the next 18 months. Article as quoted makes it look like one $104K monthly payment is all that's left.

Gotcha. I was thinking we still owed that fool more money, but I easily lose track of time these days and was hoping that the end of pouring money down a rathole was coming to a close quicker than I thought. Oh well.

He was the 6th highest paid coach??? No way... or that stat must include more than just salary.

Dooley was the 6th highest paid HC in all of CFB at one time. That would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

He had his pants specially designed and tailored with custom dyes from a small town in Italy. This took approx. 1 month of research to find the designer that would make the pants and another 2 months for payment/design/delivery. He did all of this instead of recruiting and coaching.

Thought Boy Dooley got the axe at TYS after the Vandy beatdown in Nashville? But maybe not.

The Weis deals make Fiorino look like she merely stole some printer tapes from HP. But couldn't happen to a nicer bunch than ND.

Hambone probably got that idea from this very board. He read all the posters who are fiscally clueless and have that wonderful "open up the checkbook" philosophy. Dude figured if you pay big dollars then you'll get a good coach.

Really? I thought a store in Knoxville was the source. At least that's what one poster said at one time.

My sarc meter is returning conflicting data here, so unsure.

Dooley may have been a poor coach but obviously was a good contract negotiator. Or was TN just in that bad of a bind when Kiffin left?

It was John H Daniel & Company. I doubt that DD was doing any of the leg work of acquiring the material, but it makes for a believable VN DD story.

Yep, we'll be paying Dooley through the 2016 season. That's very heartbreaking considering how bad he made things.

Too bad there is not a "Horrible F@#$% Head Coach" clause in there somewhere where it made the buyout portion null and void. He is a good negotiator to get that buyout. I am assuming that he is still wide receivers coach for the Dallas Cowboys, so he must not be totally incompetent. I have not looked at the Cowboys stats to see.
