Football Rumor Mill...

This whole "Woe-is-Me, Nobody wants to coach at Tennessee" notion is pure speculation. Hamilton never revealed what the negotiating terms were and who turned down a job offer.

Just because a few prospects may have publicly stated that they were staying, doesn't mean that they were a primary candidate, nor that they were offered the kind of salary that would make it worthwhile.

Funny how so many can't seem to distinguish speculation from fact. Until you know that Hamilton gave a serious offer to the top-tier candidates or who he in fact spoke with, you don't have enough data to make an informed judgement about that.

For all we know, he likely was shopping for a coach at the same payscale Fulmer was at. That's roughly where Kiffin and Dooley's salaries are. It's not enough, however, to lure many of the candidates in the upper echelon of college coaches.

Even though Peterson doesn't make that much at Boise, it would likely take more than 2 million to change his mind. Put 3-4 million on the table and it's likely a different discussion.

The fact of the matter is that top coaches make what they do because they are "Problem Solvers." They are hired to FIX problems like our own...not to take over elite programs stocked with talent.

this team doesnt even look like A SEC football team.Im not for sure what it looks like but its not a football team.this team is a reflection of their coach and thats Dooley. He loves to throw players under the bus.Everbody is the blame but him

Now that's a little harsh. The players ultimately make (or don't make) the plays. When Bray went out, Dooley put in Sims who failed, then Worley who, wasn't much better. At least Dooley tried something using all he had.

Let's be honest, when Hamilton FINALLY made the move to get rid of Fulmer, it wasn't his decision. He was a puppet...

And I'm sorry, it's not mainly the fans that light the fire. It's the men with the money who run the program, i.e. Haslam. Let's be honest....
The men with the money move when the fans move. If there is no outcry from the fanbase, then the money men aren't as compelled to throw their weight around.

It is the fanbase that ultimately PAYS THE BILLS. Case in point, Tennessee's TV viewing options have declined dramatically over the past few seasons. Fewer and few fans are showing up at games. Fewer and fewer team merchandise is being sold. THAT puts pressure on the AD AND the money men.

It all starts at the water cooler and on forums like this. We don't need to know the intricacies of zone blitz schemes to know that our team's win-loss ratio is going into the toilet.

who the hell would have wanted to work for mike hamilton? We have a solid qualified man setting in the AD chair now. he will make the right moves at the right time.

I don't know if he will or not, but I like his resume better than I ever did Hamilton's.

To me, this debate is very simple.

If a top coaching candidate (John Gruden, Lovie Smith, etc.) wants the job and UT is willing to pay the money, then get rid of Dooley right now and make it happen.

If there isn't any serious interest from a top level coach right now, give Dooley one more season (with some changes to the coaching staff) and see what happens.

Just my two cents.

Absolutely agree 100% if Dooley would make some staff changes.

Amen. But how do we go behind our coaches back and put up 9 to 10 milly a year and no one hear about it.

If we have to resort to replacing Dooley with another D-List coaching candidate like he was, I'd rather see him stay for next season and 2013.

However, if we're able to get a good coach to take this job then Dooley needs to go.

Candidates I'd like to see would be:

Butch Davis - Former UNC HC
Lovie Smith - Former(?) Chicago Bears HC
Jack Del Rio - Former Jacksonvile Jaguars HC
Art Briles - Baylor HC
Gus Malzahn - Auburn Offensive Coordinator
Greg Schiano - Rutgers HC
Charlie Strong - Louisville HC

Throw in the Jon Gruden pipedream.

All of those guys would be better hires worthy of firing Dooley after 2 years to upgrade to.

Lovie Smith is still coaching dumbass, and Butch Davis??? The same guy who brought sanctions to Miami and North Carolina and was fired by NC??? Can you say anything more stupid???

UT has plenty of money...Firing him won't hurt as some people think...Plus if they hire the RIGHT coach they will recoop that money rather quickly....If you honestly think this team will be any better next year then you are sadly mistaking...They have lost all confidence in Dooley and his staff....It just makes me sick to see how badly We have fallin

Financially, we can't afford to get rid of him yet. We would be paying 3 head coaches in 2012. Not happening.

Depends on the boosters. If he has their support they will not be willing to chip in on the buyout and he stays. If he does not have their support, they ask hart how much he needs and he is gone.

If Dooley had a winning record...some kind of resume to hang his hat on, coming in, I would agree with you. But I think it's a big risk at this point, seeing no progression, but regression. This team will be extremely talented next fall, with some big WR's coming in and some help at DT. I would hate to see that go to waste, and would much rather see a proven coach get a chance to lead this group.

I totally agree with you. I think the only thing that has saved Dooley this year and why he will get a pass are the injuries. And I'm not sure Bray and Hunter would have made much of a difference against Bama, LSU, USC, Georgia.

Keep Dooley and lower ticket prices by 50%. I'll watch them play for a Div2 coach at Div 2 ticket prices.

Seriously, Dooley is a loser. Nice guy, but couldn't motivate a wino to drink.

I have a Great Idea !!! When Rex gets Fired in NY throw $4M at him ... Dude would kill the recruiting trail ! Kids would play hard for him and NO CHANCE of him going back to the NFL !

They won't fire him, I don't think he is the right guy for the job either. But he they will give him one more year.

i agree with you, but if they did fire dooley after 2 years who the heck would take this job? what proven head coach would take a job at a university that has had 3 coaches in 4 years. the vols had a hard enough time finding someone to take the job when dooley took it.

Why does everyone think think this...the coffers are only so deep!

Yeah but Hamilton didn't go after anybody of note at that time...He asked Muschamp if he was interested and he in turn suggested Dooley....No big names were asked or even contacted...The timing of the situation was terrible too so Dooley was honestly an impulse hire.

I don't pretend to know or believe they have sources but their last update was.....

We’re told “no decision” yet on Derek Dooley’s future at Tennessee.

My only thing is hart has been very quiet. No show of confidence or negative statements. Could mean non issue or could mean he is working behind the scenes and does want change. Who knows
