Football Rumor Mill...

If we could get.... say a Jon Gruden pipe dream type coach... I am all in, but if we are going the same route we have every time we needed a coach, then I think the best move is no move right now ans let's see what 2012 brings

It is not even who would we get, but the long term issues I believe it would bring. We are just now getting a full team back, and just rebuilding... to change now backs us up another couple of years. The way we have to recruit Nation wide, I think it may drop us into a hole we never recover from

Another bad hire will set us back.

If we get the right coach right now, we wont have to deal with these discussions of "Who our next coach should be?".

Who could've known Fulmer would flame out?
Who could've known Kiffin would leave after 1 year?
Who could've known Dooley would replace him?

These things have set us back.

If we get the right coach, we actually have some stability going forward along with a successful program.

We're doing more damage by letting Dooley go into next season as #1 on Coachesonthehotseat.com espescially coaching in our conference where every other coach will use that as a negative recruiting tactic.

That's why I am not in full favor of firing Dooley. But I'd love to and get a big time coach in here but that's possibly at best a 50/50 chance at doing so.

The great thing about rumors like this is that even if they aren't true and have 0 substance at first - they can actually turn into something that is true and does have substance.

I don't care if it's true right now or not - atleast it's out there to gain momentum.

I wouldn't be in favor of hiring any of those guys. I'd much rather just keep Dooley if that's the options.

Who would you be in favor of hiring?

Honestly all of those guys I'd take over Derek Dooley.

How can you tell me that Dooley is a better coach now & for the future of our program than any of those guys listed.

Im one of the most optimistic guys you'll find about this team but Dooley is not going to get us back into a consistent Top 25 team let alone contending for a SEC Title.

The best thing we have going for us is Mike Hart was not the guy who hired Dooley and he comes from Alabama so he can understand what the fan base wants.

But legitimately what big time coach out there isn't getting paid a ton of money that would A. Want to leave the program rather in the NFL or NCAAF and B. Is coaching a team that can't match our offer and or give more for them to stay with them.

But when fans stop coming to Games and stop buying Tn jerseys, shirts, etc, that takes a toll also. His contract does have a big buy out in it, but you have to take lesser of the 2 evils. You may lose a large number of your fans because you seem to accept mediocrity. TN is has a SERIOUS fan base, but if they get to a certain point, they will stop supporting the team and the university. Some people on here will say "We dont need fans like
that", well, that is true, but when it comes to
$$$, band wagon fans Matter.

Agreed. Pay up front for a PROVEN coach now if you can get one. You will get a return on your investment in tickets sold etc. A packed Neyland every week will make your money back for you. Having a stadium at 20,000 less than capacity is losing money in addition to having a clown coaching this team, and not getting results. Sometime (hopefully sooner than later) the AD will have to bite the bullet, and buy Tennessee out of this mess with a BIGTIME proven head coach.

I'll say it again. I'm not for just firing Dooley and seeing who we could get. That would indeed hurt us more than it could help us.

However, I think the players, recruits and the fans HAVE to know that this program WILL NOT accept mediocrity. If it takes some turnover every few years to get it right, then so be it.

But just leaving a HC in (whose team basically laid down on him during and since the Georgia game, and one who had a losing record as a HC) doesn't help the program.

I was all for giving CDD 3-4 seasons, but I never expected this team to fall to the bottom of the SEC like this and with this much talent.

If I were Hart, I would want to get MY guy in ASAP and start things rolling in the right direction, right from the start. He has more clout to go after the top tier coaches than Hamilton. So, I would at the very least, gauge interest from Gruden (just ask him...what would it take to get him onboard? Offer him $4 mill base and a $500k bonus for BCS bowl appearances), Patterson, Peterson or even Sumlin (who is red hot right now).

If none of those are interested, then keep Dooley for another year and see how things go.

I just don't want to see us hire another Sabanite or anyone for that matter that is not a coach that has made it on their own and not riding on some name coaches coat tail...

We didnt hire Dooley because of his Saban connection.

We hired him because of his coaching lineage with his father Vince Dooley.

That made him the biggest name of the remaining candidates who didnt turn down Hamilton. We could've hired the likes of Troy Calhoun or Todd Graham, but they didnt bring along any "name factor" for the job.

The only possible scenario where I would agree with canning Dooley right now would be to hire a can't miss coach. None of those guys qualify.
