Football lingo - are we outdated?

When you say football lingo, I think of terms like "nickel" and "RPO" and "cover 2". I don't actually think of "schollie" or "natty" as football terms. Plus, I've never heard "schollies" before in my life. Just always heard and read "scholarships."

I have heard "natty," but prefer not to use it. It may be one of those phrases that was badly outdated from the very day someone invented it. Like my mother-in-law saying "delish" to mean delicious. Just never sounded right.

I'm sure this has been very helpful in answering your question. :)
“Presser“ is another one that I find annoying.

Hope JH has the lingo for “cover the slant route”

Obsolete, is the price they're charging for season tickets. Look at the price in 1998 (Natty year) versus now. The quality of the product has hit an all time low, due to administrative failures! Now however, they expect you to spend a fortune for a football weekend. It's like ordering a $32 steak at Ye Olde Steakhouse...but receiving a Krystal !!!

I see a lot of us throw around a bunch of football slang, but I seriously wonder if anyone actually involved in football uses those terms anymore. "Natties" and "schollies" come to mind. Are we like a bunch of old guys trying to keep up with the times but we don't know we're outdated? Are we like the guy who finds a funny internet meme and posts it on social media long after everyone else has seen it and moved on? Are we those guys?

Anyone know if these terms are still being used by the people who currently coach and play? And are there other examples of "cool" football terms that no one except us fans actually uses anymore?

Just wonderin about the lingo we use.

That sounds like words "Bostonian's" would use.. lol

Since we haven't actually sniffed or held one in this century, our "Nattie," must be dusted and polished up from time to time.
But in the meantime.....get off my lawn!

It's interesting how new football terms come about and take hold. Remember when you first heard OL's referred to as, "Big Uglies?" And then they became, "Full-grown Men!"

And there are the cliches (thank you, Captain Obvious) like, " this contest will be settled between the goalposts." Really? Not at the mall?😆

I really just hope “we can get our playmakers the ball in space.” Because getting our playmakers the ball in space is what it’s all about is the key to a good offense.

I swear that phrase used over and over again when Clawsen was brought in to run the offense. It’s still used in every coach speak interview “presser”. And of course the Volnation favorite “Hopefully Bailey will have better “pocket presents” than least season.”

Good examples! Or else, some full-grown with bad attitudes will run to the ball!

When there's an all out rush, the players "pin their ears back" ... which I am sure helps cut down wind resistance, especially inside the helmet
