I see a lot of us throw around a bunch of football slang, but I seriously wonder if anyone actually involved in football uses those terms anymore. "Natties" and "schollies" come to mind. Are we like a bunch of old guys trying to keep up with the times but we don't know we're outdated? Are we like the guy who finds a funny internet meme and posts it on social media long after everyone else has seen it and moved on? Are we those guys?

Anyone know if these terms are still being used by the people who currently coach and play? And are there other examples of "cool" football terms that no one except us fans actually uses anymore?

Just wonderin about the lingo we use.

When you say football lingo, I think of terms like "nickel" and "RPO" and "cover 2". I don't actually think of "schollie" or "natty" as football terms. Plus, I've never heard "schollies" before in my life. Just always heard and read "scholarships."

I have heard "natty," but prefer not to use it. It may be one of those phrases that was badly outdated from the very day someone invented it. Like my mother-in-law saying "delish" to mean delicious. Just never sounded right.

I'm sure this has been very helpful in answering your question. :)

Everytime I see those words, I cringe. Yes, very outdated.

I would bet those terms came from SportsCenter back in the day. I remember they were cutting edge in the 80's and 90's.

If you want to see an old guy use outdated sports slang to try to connect with 18-30 year olds try Jim Rome. He is embarrassing to watch or listen to.

Football slang on Volnation is minimal.
The use of football clichés here is mind numbing at times.
Original thought is not in our wheelhouse.

Good point...what are some of those lame clichés? I don't meant legit football terms, but what are some of the outdated things we say, like "It's not about the x's and o's but the Jimmies and Joes"?

Maybe I am an old guy. Well, time causes that. And my only other option? I am not willing to go there yet. But since I have your attention for a moment, and assuming you are somewhat younger than me, I can tell you this: Slang, terms, and lingo changes faster than anyone can keep up with it. And there are plenty of other concerns that will come along that makes keeping up with it less important as you age. You seem to be at a stage or age that it seems to be of paramount importance. As long as we stick with the English language? Maybe since you are concerned with this area of concern, you can serve as a designated interpreter. Whether you do or not? It probably won't change what time the sun rises or sets. And some terms will be figured out without causing a swarm of locust to descend, or the lakes to turn to blood.

Whatever happens, we will get through it. But if you want to dedicate yourself to this dire cause, you might have our full support. Probably not, but if it gives you a sense of purpose? Go for it. Be prepared for a certain amount of those who agree and disagree. You will most likely get both. Good luck, youngster.

Facts are still facts no matter what age someone is.

It's still about the X's and O's but always works much better with greater Jimmys and Joes.

Go get us a stacked roster like Clemson and alaBubba has and we'll be kicking lots of (_)_) too.

VFL...GBO!!!

I have an inherent dislike of pop culture memes and slogans, I generally just ignore them though (I can still remember when I used to say "far out", and not while watching Lebowski again). So, yeah, I couldn't tell ya' whether these terms are cool or not. I know they won't be coming from my mouth, it's damn near impossible to be cool ay my age.
