Football as a War Game: The Annotated Journals of General R. R. Neyland

Good day VolNation! I am a lifelong Vol fan and have been reading posts for the past three years. I recently decided to join and contribute to the posts i.e. am in the middle of finishing Grad school and recently found some new free time in life.

I have recently come across a few new books to add to my extensive collection of Tennessee material: Football as a War Game. I found two of these at a small junk store still in original wrappings. I have vaguely heard of the book in the past, but actually never saw a copy. Upon flipping through the pages wondering why I do not have this on my shelf, I decided to do a Google search and found little to no material or anything about this book. The only copy I saw for sale was on Amazon for $399.99. I figured this would be the best place to find out info on the book or where the book is still for sale. I actually have one extra copy still in its cellophane wrapper if anyone wants to entertain me with an offer via PM feel free. I’m not here to sell just gain information on the book. But, figured I would offer to the elite of UT fans before putting it on eBay. Sorry for the post if this is a book all of you have, but would enjoy any knowledge you have on it's history and or making. I know it's not very old (2006), but seems rare to me. I’ll sign off to finish the BCS Title Game and read comments tomorrow.

Thanks for your time VolNation!

I've never heard of it but sounds like a book I would love to add to the collection... just not for $400. Anyone have the cliff notes version?

I have this book, my friend helped sell them one gameday in Knoxville, but they were shut down because they did not have the proper licenses to be selling. As it turned out my friend was a friend of the guy who published the book. VERY interesting, it is bound like the Bible (as it should be haha) with gold trim on the pages and a ribbon book mark. It essentially has General Neylands notebook copied with annotations and descriptions throughout. The funny thing is the offense that was run by Neyland is a lot of what you see today with the spread.

Had no idea that thing could go for as much as $400.00 though, I might be able to get my hands on a dozen more, will post again if I can!

check that may be silver trim on the pages

This was a scholarly work by Dr. Andy Kozar, fullback on the '51 National Championship team and long-time faculty member at UT. Dr. Kozar passed away last year at the age of 79. As the title suggests, this volume chronicles the emergence of Neyland's coaching philosophy as military strategy. One nugget that should be of interest is the fact that, despite the survival of only 7 Neyland maxims, he originally had closer to 40, which Kozar lists, in their entirety, if I remember correctly.

Unfortunately, my brother's copy, which I gave him for Christmas 3-4 years ago, is in storage, so I don't have ready access to it. I doubt that you are going to find significant excerpts of this book available online. One option would be to request it through interlibrary loan, something you could do through your local public library and which costs nothing to borrow in that fashion.

Found t his description. Don't know if the number is still correct or??

Andy Kozar, an All-American fullback at Tennessee in 1952, has painstakingly compiled and annotated the General's fabulous notebooks., The result is an absolutely unique study of the development of football (and, in particular, Tennessee football) in the early to mid 20th century. It's an incredibly detailed compilation of the journals of coaching philosophy, practice planning and techniques, and game strategies in Neyland's own words and diagrams, with commentary and history provided by Dr. Kozar, one of Neyland's greatest players and, later, a Chicago Bears standout.

The product of six years of research, the book includes more than 250 classic historical photos, more than 200 digitally reproduced journal pages in Neyland's handwriting, Kozar's explanatory notes, early football innovations (such as the use of film to break down plays and games), Neyland's psychological strategies and rules and guidelines for players, and much more.

It's a handsome, coffee-table sized book that's meticulously prepared (like the coach who provided the material) and lovingly compiled (by one of the all-time Vols). If you're a coach, a true student of the game, and especially a Tennessee aficionado, this is a must-have addition to your library.

Came across this...original price was 75.00, I'd proudly pay that as the money goes right back to UT! I don't know if the address in the article or the phone # provided in post #14 are still valid. I'd love to get a copy though.
