They are heralded because of their picks against a USF team with a short scrambling QB who threw lots of balls that looked like Simms lame duck last week.

These guys are fast, and they are all ball hawks, but several of them are also at a disadvantage against our WR's and a big one against our TE's if you look at their height and their vertical.

When you are a much smaller corner trying to cover a big WR in man coverage, you hand fight and try to take him off his route and get very close to pass interference as you bump him when he is trying to get by you. Kelley Washington (despite the attitude that made people upset with him) was NEVER held back in man to man coverage by a college cornerback, and if some of our taller WR's have his attitude they will have great things happen to them.

This is who Florida will be starting:

1 Janoris Jenkins CB Jr. 2V 5-11/184 Pahokee, FL (Pahokee)
Had a pick last week.

10 Will Hill S Jr. 2V 6-1/207 West Orange, NJ (St. Peter's Prepatory)
Has been suspended for the last two games. Urban brought him back just when he needed him, which is par for the course for Urban Meyer suspensions. He is very hard hitting.

Primary backup is Matt Elam who we all remember.
22 Matt Elam SS Fr. HS 5-10/202 Palm Beach Gardens, FL (William T. Dwyer)

35 Ahmad Black S Sr. 2V 5-9/190 Lakeland, FL (Lakeland)
Two picks for 12 points against USF. But it was encouraging watching him play. There is zero change he can cover our tallest receivers without pass interference. If a ball is poorly and underthrown he can take it to the house, but if the ball is overthrown he may throw the large target on the ground because he misjudges how far over his midget head the ball is going.

28 Jeremy Brown CB So. RS 5-10/184 Orlando, FL (Boone)
He is a starter. Left the game against USF with cramps. He said ``I just feel for whoever [faces] the whole secondary,''. That would be us...

All three of these freshmen saw their first action last week due to Brown's injury.

14 Jaylen Watkins CB Fr. HS 5-11/183 Cape Coral, FL (Cape Coral)
29 Joshua Shaw CB Fr. HS 6-0/191 Palmdale, CA (Palmdale)
31 Cody Riggs CB Fr. HS 5-9/166 Fort Lauderdale, FL (St. Thomas Aquinas)

I wanted Josh Shaw on our team, and without sour grapes I have to say that he has the potential to be a superstar. He is extremely fast, and very physical. Cody Riggs is another midget for UF. I can only dream that one side of the field would be Riggs and Black trying to cover two of our giants and failing.

One of the

Here is who Simm's needs to get the ball to in matchups with their smallest guys:

11 Justin Hunter WR 6-4 183 Fr. HS Virginia Beach, Va. (Ocean Lakes)
He has to fight through hand checks and not get thrown down unless he is going to get a penalty flag. He can jump higher and farther than anyone else on the team, but he was physically intimidated by guys during the UT Martin and Oregon game. He is a true freshman and I may be too hard on him, but if he had the attitude of a Crabtree or a Bolden he could not be covered. He looks like Randy Moss at Marshall except Randy Moss was ready to punch guys in the face and Justin is looking for a flag to be thrown when someone starts chicken fighting.

6 Denarius Moore WR 6-1 194 Sr. 3L Tatum, Texas (Tatum)
Our big play guy is not smaller really than anyone he might be matched up with.

21 Da'Rick Rogers WR 6-3 215 Fr. HS Calhoun, Ga. (Calhoun)
He is physically ready to dominate. He has a terrifically strong upper body. Some of the guys who may hand check Hunter into submission will find Rogers pushing them away.

83 Zach Rogers WR 6-0 178 So. 1L Nashville (David Lipscomb HS)
Has to be the possession receiver who never makes a mistake. If it is 3rd and 7 he needs to run a perfect come back just at the sticks. His drop that killed the drive with 3 minutes left in the first half against Oregon made Dooley sick to his stomach, because Dooley was the steady guy always ready to get the first down without drops at UVA.

88 Luke Stocker TE 6-6 253 Sr. 3L Berea, Ky. (Madison Southern)
He needs this to be a big game so he can get paid by the NFL. Slow start, has to quit dropping balls that hit him in the hands and just realize that a ball thrown behind him is a ball he has to catch if he is going to be an NFL stud.

81 Mychal Rivera TE 6-4 240 Jr. Tr. Valencia, Calif. (College of the Canyons)
Watching Black try and fail to cover the tall WR and TE for USF made me excited thinking about our options with a great passing TE like Rivera backing up Stocker.

80 Matt Milton WR 6-5 220 Fr. HS Mascoutah, Ill. (Mascoutah)
He is probably a year away from belonging on the list because he is still learning the WR position. He was one of the biggest RB's in HS last year. Could use a RS if we end up without any more WR injuries. Will be a big time gamer once he learns the position.

they aren't heralded because of the USF game. they were already heralded because in the preaseason the SEC coaches voted Janoris Jenkins first team All-SEC and Will Hill and Ahmad Black second team All-SEC. the USF and Miami of Ohio games where they've combined for 8 INTs (should be 9 but for a bogus penalty) is just what an outstanding secondary does to inferior passing teams trying to play catchup on the scoreboard.

Swampy, I remember being in the swamp more than once and watching VERY physical Gator cornerbacks throwing TN WR's almost down and ruining the timing of the team offensively.

I am convinced that one of the only advantages that TN has against your team is that if we decide to throw high and deep, Justin Hunter cannot be outjumped by Jenkins or Hill or Black, and Black would be physically abused and humiliated by Rogers, by Stocker and even by Rivera.

Shaw by next year will be your best corner I am convinced.

Nice analysis. My concern remains experience levels. Really was highlighted against Oregon. But, one or two early catches, especially over the middle (gasp!) could give our young guys the confidence they need to make a big play later in the game. Looking forward to a good game!

I wish.

Simms is not ready to use the whole field.

He will be looking at WR's and possibly RB and TE only on one side of the field. If we can run we will still have some great chances to have some long passing plays. He just has to make sure he throws zero underthrown lame passes because Florida will turn those into 6 points.

They have a very good secondary. Simms did not show great last week. The WR's have talent but their skills are still in development. UT may be able to exploit UF's LB's a little with RB's and TE's but they have the advantage going in UT WR vs UF DB.

sjt, did you watch Black struggle over and over against a tall USF player?

Simms may not have the ability to exploit it, but we have the match up advantage at points in their secondary.

Bad matchup, Simms versus that secondary is a disaster waiting to happen. Hope it doesn't come to that.

USF had 6 catches in 23 attempts... their secondary didn't really struggle with anyone.

I am not trying to diss UT's young talented WR's but they simply aren't skilled enough yet to make their athletic advantages count against top tier DB's.

I hope you are right and they bounce off last week by learning how to create separation and such... but that's a tall order.

Other than the fact Zach's speed (relegated to possession receiver) seemed to be downplayed (Moore might have a step on him) that seemed like a pretty good analysis. As for Zach there's no questioning his speed but I'm not sure how good he is as at making adjustments to the ball for a catch over the shoulder at full stride. Of course, nothing wrong with hitting a 10.80 100m guy with a quick slant when the DB misses the tackle.

If we continue to avoid the middle we will continue to have only a partially effective passing game. We need a good play action post pattern that hits D. Moore or J. Hunter early for a good gain. It is an easy throw that will give Simms and the receivers confidence plus put the DBs on notice. We have to take the risk, otherwise we'll be too predictable. Besides, a pick in the middle is a turn over, a pick on the edge is a touchdown.

i really hope that you are right, MHF, but i see their D being the deciding factor in the game.

they bring up the safeties the way the quacks did, force us to throw, and then have a pick fest. we might see 14 or so scored by the 'turd D.

i think this game is going to be lopsided on the order of 1994, peyton's freshman year.

I deeply desire a QB who the staff trusts enough to use the whole field for his throws.

I also agree that it will give defenses a greater and greater advantage over the course of the year if we are still unable to use the middle.

I watched Simms after SJT said he was only allowed to throw to one side and asked a few people who would know and he is absolutely correct. There are concerns about bobbled balls being picked but there are also concerns that he will miss defensive players who will jump the route. He is being given small tasks and asked to do them well. When he can prove that he is able to do that, they will ask him to do more.

182, thanks for your insight and analysis. I am sure you watched the Miami Ohio and USF games in their entirety and know a great deal about the secondary at UF.
Taking the time to show up and share what you know is what makes this board great...

I fully expect at two picks at the very least. Janoris Jenkins, Ahmad Black(led the nation in picks in 08), and Will have all been healthy contributors on the defense for at least three years, and Jeremy Brown has been lights out so far. Should be exciting to watch.

Is there really a person who is a fan of both Oregon and Florida?

Phil Fulmer is that you?

I'm not sure I'm so "encouraged" by this. Are we assuming that Simms will not overthrow anybody?

Zach's speed in pads is a little overrated. He's quick but doesn't have great break away speed, certainly nothing SEC defensive backs don't see on a weekly basis.
