Florida Football

Welcome to your very own Butch Jones ERA.
I think Butch Jones was better than Napier...

Butch Jones' record at Tennessee from 2013 to 2017 was 34-27 overall and 18-25 in the SEC. He was fired in November 2017, with two games remaining in his fifth season

Billy Napier's current record at the University of Florida is 20-20 overall and 10-14 in conference play after his first four seasons, which included a 6-7 record in 2022, 5-7 in 2023, 8-5 in 2024, and a 1-1 record to start the 2025 season as of September 2025

Hadn’t thought of that. Butch also inherited a worse situation from Dooley than Napier inherited from Mullen. Mullen won an SEC East title.

Things continue to get worse for Florida football to open the 2025 season. On the heels of a three-game losing streak to start the year 1-3, the Gators are now dealing with injury news involving their quarterback, DJ Lagway. According to a report from Graham Hall, the sophomore is back in a walking boot.

This comes after Lagway was dealing with an injury during the preseason, as well. He was in a walking boot with a ‘minor leg injury’ before fall camp began in Gainesville. The cause was reportedly due to a calf injury during a team run. It is unclear if this recent development is due to the same ailment.

However, Hall’s report does indicate that there is a belief that Lagway will be good to go for Florida’s next game. UF is off this Saturday, but will play Texas on Oct. 4. That means, unless he suffers further injury, Lagway should then be fine for when he plays Tennessee. The Vols don’t go down to play Florida until Nov. 22.

"A source familiar with Lagway's situation expressed confidence that the second-year quarterback will be ready to face Texas on Oct. 4, following the Gators' Week 5 bye." -247

3-9 is likely. Maybe 4-8

Or maybe they collapse and possibly fall to 1-11.

Who knows. Some of their opponents may prove to be frauds in the end.

I see the words "Bowl Eligible" in this tweet. How meaningless has that become? If not in the playoffs, half the players opt out or are in the portal. I guess it has a tad of meaning in lieu of "not being bowl eligible", but bowl games have lost a lot of significance. Kinda sad.
End of year exhibition game now.

its the same thing they have always been. end of the year football. I still watch any game I am capable of.

its a chance to play your young guys for the next year, 15 more days of practice that comes with it is like a whole spring of development. if you have incoming freshman early enrollees they can even participate in those practices, but not play the game. it lets coaches figure out what they need in the portal based on who is leaving vs talent they have. it gives fans a chance to go see their team, now-a-days those low level bowl games are cheaper to go to, both ticket prices as well as hotel rates. still good for recruiting, the current players get prizes, more money for the schools, and I imagine they will work out NIL deals with the players in the future.

Team will see a large number of players declining to continue, definitely not at full speed even if they do play, to preserve their health and ranking for their own NIL/transfer portal purposes.

And that is the one saving grace for the program moving forward which is, if UF brings in the right coach and ponies up the dough, they can go to the portal this off season and instantly build a team for next year.

Gone are the days of it taking 2-3 years of recruiting to rebuild a team from scratch. Now you can do it in 10 days, if you have the cash.

I've always thought that every team, regardless of whether they made a bowl or not, should have those 15 practices.

Nothing about sports is "fair," but one thing that it seems should be kept consistent, regardless of a program's resources, is the amount of practice time each team is allowed to have.

I meant dough for the players.

Having said that, this is emblematic of the long term problem, which is the escalation which will occur over time as the programs that can afford it (with alumni support) find ways to bypass any cap and build the best program in a matter of days.
If they do move on from Napier who would be your number 1 replace?

Where is the money going to come from? Boosters won't spend 20 million to show Billy the axe this season by all accounts. And do you know when the buyout drops? After next season. Perhaps they come up with the money if it really gets bad, but what's the hesitation? The guy's record is awful. Other openings have shown there isn't really much movement in the portal midseason because most guys have deals that would be negated by entering the portal.

Everyone knows Florida's NIL situation is not great. DJ Is being paid mostly by corporate 3rd parties like Chipotle, Nike, ect. and not by Florida's collective which has led to a gulf between what DJ is making and what most of the rest of the team is. All this is according to an ex-Gator player. He says it's created resentment for DJ on the team, but then that tweet was deleted! Hmm...

Would a new coach breed more investment into providing him a roster? Well, what was the hesitation when Billy was hired? It's not just recruiting either. You can no longer look at recruiting to determine what sort of roster Florida has because the trend lately is to lose guys in the portal they want to keep, (who go on to beat them sometimes) and not replace them with like talent in the portal. Every year Gator fans complain about their portal haul. But they come up with creative excuses to explain it that have nothing to do with not having the money to pay players.

If UF alumni won't pony up enough dough then you are right, and they don't deserve to flourish. Perhaps we are doomed to SEC also-ran status, though as I have said many times in my view that is the inevitable end for most teams as, eventually, they will not be able or willing to pay to keep up with an ever-increasing target from the likes of Texas or Texas A&M, or Ohio State, or those types of programs with access to enough money they can outspend everyone else.

Kiffin absolutely comes to mind because he generates excitement on offense and I believe if recruiting and using NIL down here could be very successful. I just don't want another experiment or mid-major guy.

There's so much competition for the recruits in Florida's footprint now it's ridiculous. Not just in your own state but big spenders from out-of-state swooping in and buying talent. So when there are a handful of schools that can pay more than you for the recruits in your footprint, it's not a great sign long-term.

There are lots of people in positions to know who say it will not be Kiffin. I've heard "personality" conflicts alleged but I think it has more to do with how much control over the program Lane would demand.
