Florida fans don't really hate Vol fans

There was no intensity to speak of in the UT/Fla. rivalry before the division of the SEC into east and west, because UT had not played UF very much over the years, and because UT was extremely dominant over the gators. The SEC divisional play and the arrival of Spurrier and his arrogance and domination of the east changed that, together with the factors previously mentioned. Arguably, Spurrier was the real flash point of the rivalry. But time has shown that Spurrier is pretty average as a coach when placed in a more difficult environment. That fact though has yet to be received by Spurrier's ego.

Arguably, Spurrier was the real flash point of the rivalry. But time has shown that South Carolina is pretty average and any coach that coaches at South Carolina is going to have similar results, I don't care how good they are. That fact though has yet to be received by many Tennessee fans that loathe what Spurrier did to us in the 90s.

I don't mean to be dogging, but give the man credit where it's due. South Carolina is a much better program with Spurrier at the helm.

My stance on bama softened when we kept beating them every year. Let us beat the gators two or three times in a row, then see how they feel.

Exactly!... this is nothing more than pity. That worse! A couple of wins in a row will change that tune.

A much better program? If you consider having a .500 or so program much better, then maybe. But the fact remains that Spurrier got all his glory at UF, with a bit at Duke for his herculean task there. Now he is older and coaching at a moribund, historically poor program and he is going into the sunset achieving no more glory. Which seems to indicate that some of his coaching prowess of past years at UF, was a direct result of the availability of great players, and not exclusively because of his great coaching. Urban Meyer seems to have placed Spurrier's coaching ability in the proper context.

Definitely.

It's taking some luster off the Bama rivalry and jumped FLA and GA.
Many of the recent fanbase / students don't recognize how big the Bama game used to be.

Out of all the Gator fans I have ever met. I would say only 2 I would be friends with. Make that tree now.

Most are irrational, obnoxious, and there team is always better no matter how many losses they had

Judging solely by record it's tough to see SC's improvement with Spurrier (over Holtz, anyway). However, the simple fact is that TN, GA and Clemson no longer consider a Spurrier lead SC team an easy win. SC is a tough place to win. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Consider this, if Meyer had gone from Utah to SC, what would SC be like? What about Saban? It's tough to say, but my guess is that they'd be very similar to what they are now, a decent team that can hang with anybody.

There are many times SC was tough for UT, even before Spurrier. The overall quality of the SC program probably cannot be measured totally by the won-loss record of SC under Spurrier. Arguably the team might be better in some respects, but being better still is measured by the bottom line, wins and losses, and Spurrier doesn't have the bottom line that matches his ego, or even the bottom line that SC fans expect after such a publicized hire. As for Clemson and UT not taking SC for granted as an easy win, both schools are in the doldrums now and that magnifies the significance of the game for both.

florida and bama fans are the worst in the SEC. Georgia fans are obnoxious after they win, but whimper like pups after a loss.

Well, I will admit to a more intense feeling of "dislike" towards the Vols team during the tenure of Knoxvillians favorite Florida coach Ron Zook.:D

Welcome.

We'll see how you feel when we actually start beating you again. :)

So we are safe for, what, another 5 or 6 years?

Now that could take a lot longer. Could be decades.

Very accurate analysis of the rivalry, IMO.

I was working on my rebuttal and I stopped, sat back for a minute, and thought to myself, "why am I arguing for this clown?" You're right, Spurrier stinks.
My apologies to my Vol family. :hi:

Hey Lawgator,

You think Meyer is a gator long term, or is he Irish bound, in the near future.

My best friend is a Gator (I know I need new friends) and he is not bad at all...Like said before there are "those" fans in every crowd and typically are students liquored up...He and his family are lifelong gator fans and really are great people...The hatred for them personally is FSU as that is the team that they hate the most and the people in Polatka say the same...I do think that there is more hatred from us to them than backwards by far...I think Bama is Satan literally and the team I hate the most but that is my opinion.

Carter: I know, I know. But if the tables were reversed you'd have no mercy reminding me of the situation so I figure to get my licks in now.

Beecher: I honestly am not sure how much more Meyer can prove right now by going to Notre Dame. Granted, he reportedly has a soft spot for them, and I suppose it might be the ONE other college job he would ever consider. But why go from a place where you are paid great and have tremendous support and a built-in recruiting advantage to a place where tempers are already short amd you start from a pretty crappy position?

I think he goes NFL before he goes to Notre Dame.

I would stay @ Florida if it was me.

But he needs to go to ND.:good!:

Get those shots in now gator. Superman might just leave the building next year. Gators are fair game after that.

Notre Dame needs someone like Charlie Strong or Randy Shannon. Someone that can recruit for them now and get them back on the road to success. I think they do better with someone young, hungry, and tireless.

Charlie Strong over Urban Meyer?

I used to think that Tebow would stay all four years just because he loves it. But I am starting to think that if UF wins big on 1/8, then if the NFL committee tells him he is first round, he might well take the money and go, figuring to finish up in the offseason.

When I was in law school I used to see Emmit Smith, after he had gone to the NFL, in the Spring semester. I think he came back and finished that way. It can be done for someone who really wants it.
