Bet this guy rises. And spits excellence. No, I mean in the rankings. And even if he doesn't. Moseley was a 2 star turned 3-star.

And yet, McCoy, Hood, and Gibson are going to be high draft picks. So he must be good at developing. And maybe, just maybe, losing 2 of those 3 had an effect on how well the CBs played.

While I mostly agree, 2 of those were portal additions. Gibson is the outlier .

Since this thread is talking about recruiting, I'm talking about high school recruiting. Do you think our HS recruiting is sufficient?

I dont know if Tennessee a 5* CB in my life. The last elite DB recruit was probably Janzen Jackson

Portal additions or not, Martinez deserves credit for their development.

You still have to recruit those transfer players.
McCoy has been much better on the field at Tennessee than he was at Oregon State

Not until class of 2025 and 2026 have I been satisfied with the CB recruiting. Not satisfied overall with safety recruiting.

McCoy was fantastic in the 5 games he started at oregon st. Lead the team in PBU and had 2 int including a game sealing int. He had a bigger stage and started every game here and it led to more recognition. Its a shame we haven't seen if he developed into what people think he is. Im surprised so many people think hes a lock for the first round.

I was just thinking the other day about Terry McDaniel, the converted WR who ended up being a first round pick at CB by the Raiders.
He wasn't very tall and had brick hands at times, so we ended up making a helluva CB out of him instead of a WR.

Who cares how he got them? The portal is a thing now. Kiffin emphasizes the portal over high school. It works for him. Others take the opposite approach.

Martinez is the CB coach and he’s producing good CBs, so he’s going a good job. That’s the point. I don’t give a damn where he gets them. You don’t get extra points because they came from high school.

The guy I was replying to said it’s time for Willie to go…because he’s not signing highly rated high school CBs. As if that’s more important than ACTUALLY PRODUCING top level CBs.

His Freshman CB Redmond is in the hunt forTrue Freshman of the year award. I think that is pretty good recruit9ing of high school players.

I care how he gets them because when your two starters go down, you need this thing called depth, which comes primarily through high school recruiting.

Also, his job is the SECONDARY. I was talking anout the secondary as a whole. Where is our safety recruiting and development.

He has nailed the portal but we need depth and safety play. We haven't had great safety play under his leadership.

A) He’s the CB coach. Banks is the Safety Coach. I understand the titles, but it’s been well established that Safeties are Banks’ purview. So for starters, you’re blaming him for a position he doesn’t coach. I do think it’s fair to criticize the Safety recruiting & development.

B ) When the 2 starters went down, he plugged in another NFL draft pick in Hood. The 4th CB was a true freshman he recruited from high school who was highly underrated and will play in the NFL one day, but took some lumps because he’s a freshman.

Your expectations are absurd. He’s producing NFL CBs, but he should be fired because his 4th CB isn’t as good as his first, since he isn’t signing 5* s from high school. He ONLY has 3 future NFL draft picks, at least 2 of them 1st round. It’s not his fault McCoy and Gibson got hurt. You’re looking for someone to blame Benares you’re unhappy with bad luck.

Show me another CB coach in the SEC or nation who has, on his current roster and who he developed, 2 projected R1 CBs (McCoy and Hood), and another projected to be drafted next year (Gibson). And then show me how he’d still have two good CBs (better than Hood and Redmond) if the top 2 got hurt.

You can’t. Which means no one has developed CBs on the level Willie has. But yeah, fire Willie. 🙄

A) I didn't realize that about Banks. If true, that changes my stance on Willie.

Why would you say my high school recruiting expectations are absurd? We recruit at an elite level at every other position (#1 QB, #1 WR, #1 OT Multiple 5 star DL, top 50 LBs). Can you at least concede that our HS recruiting lags behind every other position? Maybe Willie shouldn't be fired but we are simply recruiting a better caliber of player from the High School level at every other positon.
