I have seen a familiar theme from some people. “This is a good team. We’ve just got to clean up some of these mistakes”
This is off the top of my head. Keep in mind, I’m not a Vols fan here so I am sure many of you will be able to add to this.
Georgia 2015. Fumble on the 1 yard line, Georgia returns it 100 yards for a TD. That's a 14 point swing.
South Carolina 2015 FF on a long run to keep them from scoring, win 27-24
Florida 2016. 1st and goal from the 1 after a fumbled punt (because Florida suffers from the same kind of stupid). No points. Later with a 1st and goal from the Florida 3, Dobbs threw an interception in the endzone. And there were a slew of dropped passes in that 1st half. That’s 14 points.
Georgia 2016. Jalen Hurd fumbles on the 1 yard line (celebrating before he scored if I recall). Give up a 50 yard TD pass with 10 seconds left (not a Hail Mary). That’s 14 points.
Texas A&M 2016. 7 turnovers. Who knows how many points this prevented and/or put A&M in position to score. Also had a FF/touchback in that game or we lose by 14.
There’s Florida 2017. FF on long runs TWICE
I know you can name things from other games and from other seasons. The point is pretty clear. This is not some sort of freak occurrence. It was not out of the ordinary. It’s what Tennessee does under Butch Jones.
For those of you who know what time it is, you know this is nothing new. But, I just wanted to point this out, because Tennessee has been giving points away to the opponent all on their own for a long time now.
Added a couple to your list. Now consider that we are one Hail Mary (one could say that was only able to happen because of the celebration penalty) and one OT fumble recovery (fortunate bounce) away from being 6-6 last year.
A lot of the reasons we were even close to being in a situation to win those games were because of major "effort" plays, that simply didn't exist in the 4 years before the CBJ era, so it's hard to knock Butch, because we could have been WAY out of those games if it weren't for "effort" plays. But still, the evidence is there. This stuff keeps happening, and we can't possibly win them all. It's downright amazing that we won so many of those games. It's been disproportional so far, and I'm scared of what happens if things equalize.
