Five Vols to watch this spring

Maybe I should. I don't consider someone who gets 0 carries in a season as being used. My point after that was that if all you need is a lead blocker or safety valve, then you aren't looking for much. I don't think the development of a FB will play any role at all in our success. I think we have 10 guys on scholly or on the scout team who could do nothing but lead block.

A fullback in a I formation offense isn't going to get a lot of carries. If you don't think Will Bartholomew was used during his time here then you are wrong, simply put. Also, if we could just plug in some random guy at lead blocker, don't you think we would have done that in the past two years?

If that's what you were going for, fine. Like I said, I think you are a sharp guy, but I will venture to say the only guy on your list that will have any kind of key role in our being a successful football team is Cunningham. I took your blog to be saying these are the top 5 Vols to watch this spring, not the Top 5 spring suprises. Guess I'm the only idiot who goes by the thread title.
I'll give you 5, and maybe that'll show you what I took as "Five Vols to watch this spring":

1. BJC/JC - Who steps up and becomes the leader.
2. Demetrice Morley - Still the same player
3. Ellix Wilson - Stepping in for an AA caliber player.
4. Gerald Jones - Injury free, primetime prospect?
5. Ben Martin - We severely need someone to rush the passer off the edge.Just quickly put together, but 5 Vols that are essential to the success of the team, hence, "5 Vols to watch this spring".

I respect your opinion and have nothing bad to say about you, just think your title should have been a little different if you meant what you say you did.

or you could name it "Five things everybody on here already knows"

A) Not to insult Fostermom, once again, I have my reservations about a mother of a player coming to a message board to post about strategy from a coach who has never witnessed a single practice.

B) Go back, read, try to comprehend, and get out from under kpt's gooch. I've explained myself plenty.

A) I'm sure Arian talks to his mother a lot. They seem like they would be pretty close. Maybe that's where she got here info, from Arian. I think he would know a lot more about the type of offense UT will run this year than you.

B) Just because I agreed with KPT doesn't mean anything except I agreed with him. You might want to watch the person attacks. What a choad!

That's exactly what I was about to put.

817, It is amazing how long you continued to dig... you'd have looked better if you'd just said "OK, I was wrong". When you started in with the name calling, you just made yourself look worse.

Anyone who doesn't know the value to a running game of a solid blocking FB... simply doesn't know much about the game. If Foster, Holbert, Bartholomew, or Johnson emerge as a bulldozer... it could make THE difference in the running game. If UT could have run last year, they might have won the SEC, probably would have won at Cal, and would have at least been more competitive against Bama and UF.

Do you think Austin Johnson will be a FB? I thought we recruited him as a MLB/DE, but noticed they changed his position on rivals to FB.

I don't know. If they do want a FB and one of the other guys doesn't work out, he has the right frame and apparently mindset. One of the reasons I think many considered him underrated was that he looks versatile and malleable. Of course that might have hurt his rating too since they couldn't pin him down to a particular position. He might even have a big enough frame to up to 280 or so and play DT.

I read someone a few weeks ago who said he really looked solid at MLB...

I think this year Cooper and Holbert hold down the FB position with Bartholomew hopping in if one of them goes down.

I've read somewhere that they have been impressed with him at MLB. I remember saying that I thought he looked good in the middle in his vids but everybody said he was to slow to play backer. I think he'll end up on the D side unless Bartholomew and Cooper don't work out.

I disagree strongly with all of this.

As for being used, Lorenzo Neal and Mack Strong get a handful of carries every year, but if either teams seeked to trade one of these guys, the first to protest would be Ladanian Tomlinson and Shaun Alexander.

I believe Mack Strong retired this year. We'll see how important he really was this coming season if that's the case.

No reason to be a jerk. I said I respect your opinion and must have misunderstood your thread title. I wasn't disrespectful at all, just voiced my opinion the same as you voiced yours.

I didn't notice, I normally don't read blogs on here b/c half the posters are morons. I read the guys that I respect their views, and that's very very few. I read yours, and respectfully disagreed. We share alot of views on alot of things, but there is absolutely no reason in the world to be a complete smartass when I clearly state I took the thread title to mean something different then you obviously meant it.

I wasn't being a jerk. I was apologizing for misleading you.

I posted this elsewhere too...but Montori Hughes is listed on our spring roster...Did he not have to go juco or prep?

Hughes is still in high school. He's not enrolled at Tennessee.

The only early enrollees are Tauren Poole and Austin Johnson.

The Official UT Sports Roster (tentatively, obviously) has Austin at LB and number 40. Chris Donald, if you remember was number 40... now he's number 19 and still listed at LB.

About Clawson: Will he use a FB? I think he will. It doesn't matter what he did at Richmond. He's said as much. He has a different team with more talent and different strengths, and will have a team with different strengths next year with Compton/Coleman having a year of starting experience and Foster no longer at TB. He will custom fit an offense around his talent, not the other way around. I think Foster would benefit greatly from having a lead blocker.

I won't know anything in Spring Practice. Kevin Cooper or anyone else won't show me they are ready for FB in the SEC until they take on an SEC LB who couldn't give a damn if he blows the FBs knee out or not.

Ask Holbert about knees getting blown out in practice by defensive players.

Yeah, b/c we are so strong at FB we ran our offense with one about 2% of the time. Nice.

I've heard him say he'd play to our strengths, and FB isn't one. Kevin Cooper has never played FB. David Holbert has been disappointing. For anyone to call FB a "strength" on this roster is laughable at this point.

Yes he has. See the UGA game, MSU, Vandy etc.

Also, before his senior year at Baylor, he played FB quite a bit.

Holbert has been a trmendous disappointment. I was very excited to get his commit and valid reasons aside, he's failed to deliver.

I played against him in high school and I told him to go to UT while we were shaking hands. When he commited I was so pumped, but he hasn't done much at all. Maybe he can have a good senior year.

Nice work Groves. You really hit on three of these guys. Too bad Ricardo left the team, because I think you were right about him, too.
