Currently we (UT) has verbal commitments from four Rivals Five Star recruits (and with Marvin Austin we will have five). However. I just happened to go back and look at the recruiting class of 2002 in which we also signed five 5-star recruits. They were:
1)James Banks
2)Mondre Dickerson
3)Brandon Jefferies
4)Jonathan Mapu
5)Gerald Riggs jr.

We also signed two 2-Star recruits
1)Leon Pinkley (who to the best of my memory never enrolled).
2)Jason Hall (DE, who lead the team in sacks his senior year and was a solid SEC caliber player for 2-3 years at UT and IMO was a better player than any of the 5-Stars in his class, though final verdict not yet in on Mapu).

Based on the evidence above, I say send the 5-Stars packing and sign 25 two-Stars!! :whistling:

Without Mapu, and Trooper coming in and fixing Riggs' head, you are probably right.

you don't follow recruiting too much do you? highly doubtfull we get Austin. It's likely Florida State, followed by USC and Ill.

There are some that seem to think otherwise.

James Banks was our most talented WR when he got kicked off the team, he had all american potential. Mapu was developing into a great DT before he left on his mission. Riggs had all the talent in the world, but didn't have the attitude or desire to get it done, but he still rushed for 1,000 yds in a season. Dickerson and Jeffries were huge busts. So no I don't agree with you. Also Marvin Austin is not coming to UT, that's a pipe dream.

i'm not a big recruiting geek or anything, but i'll take all the 5 stars i can get and see what happens.

but your overall point is correct, you just never know who is going to bust or break out. basing it solely on recruiting rankings is an inexact science, at best.

A guy on the recruiting forum indicated that some supposed insiders say that Austin is a lock for UT.

As for that list, all the "stars" evaluate is talent and athleticism. They tell you nothing about whether a guy will implode or not. Berry and Donald look like they have great backgrounds. I am not sure about Vinson. O'Neal has had issues in the past that hopefully UT has tried to make sure won't follow him.

BTW, Meachem was a 5-star too. Would you have rather not had him?

Yeah, UT recruited Banks as a QB. He didn't have the arm for a SEC QB. Didn't have the hands for a top WR either.

Oneal is a four star with Scout. Look at our US Army AA's from two years ago. Henderson is gone, Myers White might never see the field. D Mo is definitely no Deon or Jason Allen. I think McNeil and Crompton could be studs though.

No, I would rather have Bill Grimes the 2-Star "sleeper" in that class.:p

Seriously, I think 2002 was an anormaly and I do not think the class this year will be like that class.

James Banks is a host at his local Ruby Tuesday.

I read an article on it sometime back. He was working out to go to a NFL combine.
