Why does everyone think the university should spend so much for a coach? Did we all forget that:
a. We are already paying buyout money to Butch.
b. We just finished paying settlemwnt money for a Title IX issue.
c. Universities are, by their nature, fiscally conservative (with the possible exception of real estate holdings). Why do you think most of them survive longer than corporations?
d. The athletic department was in dire straits and borrowing from the university system, just a few years ago under Dave Hart. That can never be repeated.
With those factors at play, how could they ever swing for the fences and pay $10M/yr for anyone? Answer: we probably cannot. Hence we are not considering $10M/yr for Gruden or a $9.5M buyout for Campbell.
(Besides, why does everyone believe head coaches chase paychecks alone...surely the standard of living at $5M is not much different from $7M that one would enter into a more stressful, tenuous position. But that is another topic.)
The AD was foolish for trotting out Schiano, whether or not he ultimately becomes a great head coach. But if his budget is limited, where can he go?
I predict we get Dooley/Butch 3.0. Someone like Neal Brown at Troy. Maybe this time, the longshot bet will pay off.
