Interesting. All these coaches won something (division, conference, NCAA title) in either Year #1 or Year #2.

I would love that, but I can already hear the roar of a running haterfall if it takes him til' Year #3. :)

Definite trend of winning the conference in year 2. Year 3 is probably more realistic for us, unless we conjure up an incredible o-line through JUCO this year.

Obviously, an SEC c-ship would be the best evidence, but failing that I think the length of time he has to get it turned around depends on whether there is a sense that the Vols are on the right track.

The recruiting is definitely there, and as long as they land a major QB commitment and/or don't have something awkward come out of the BB weirdness, it sure seems like recruiting is going to feel like its on the mend.

Team attitude the last two years was a huge problem. The give up blues have got to be given up. So far so good. Let's see where things are after some tough losses or wide-margin defeats as things wear on this year.

I think he has at least two years, absent any sort of major controversy. But by the end of next season if there is not a major QB talent in the wings there is going to be some griping.

Absolutely. I will be utterly shocked if there is any give up in this team this year. Especially with so much youth on the field.

The old seniority system lends itself to those poor habits much more than the new system does.

Good list. A lot of people have been saying that it takes a year or two for a new coach to get their system in place and be effective but this simply isn't accurate. I think they're basing that on Saban's offensive struggles in his first year at Bama. Of course, he fired his OC so he must not have thought a first year lull was inevitable.

Funny you should mention that. Apparently last week Meyer made some comments that when he came in, there was a bit of hazing going on in the locker room, minor stiff really, but resulting in the freshmen being "separated" from the rest of the team.

Obviously, the majority of freshmen do not play their first year. Some exceptional ones do. But even for those that have anohter year to go before they take the field, its a huge ego blow, and not very conducive to getting them to buy into how hard they are going to have to work, to make them feel like outsiders.

If every spot is up for grabs, if you announce that freshmen have a real chance to play, I think you get them with the right mindset and work ethic at the outset. Even if it does take a year for them to see playing time.

It is amazing how hard you work once you realize you are replaceable.
