First visit to Charleston

Lived in Charleston for about 12 years. Avoid Hymans, tourist trap. Can't recommend Noisy Oyster anymore either, service has gotten terrible. Fleets Landing is excellent. AW Shucks remains one of my favorites. If you find yourself on Shem creek, give The Wreck a try.
For adult refreshments try the rooftop bar @ Vendue Inn. The Blind tiger is also a great watering hole. Again, if on Shem Creek (recommend you at least check it out) try Reds Icehouse.

Hope this helps and have a great trip.

Noisy Oyster - Definitely not a fine dining place but prices were low compared to other establishments there. Guess it is the luck of the draw on service. We just ate there last Friday the the service was a high point. Guy we had catered to our large diverse group very well, even with the little ones. Impressed my teenage nephews so much they insisted on leaving a tip from their own money.

It's a place I wouldn't mind retiring, other than it being a 6 hour drive to Knoxville(which I did for 3 seasons)

Wow. Wife and I agreed Charleston would be a nice place to live. Looking forward to seeing how Savannah measures up.

Hymans is a tourist trap, and do not stay in Georgtown unless you like the smell of papermills. There is restaurant in Mt Pleasant called "The Wreck" that is just what you are looking for, hard to find though, google it

North Charleston or W.Ashley would be the best bet for reasonable hotels

Both are nice places but when comparing the two Charleston is the ugly step sister to Savannah.

We don't ride bikes that often, but the bikes we do have are nice bikes. Is it worth bringing them or should we rent?

I worked at the one in johns island while I was in high school and summer college breaks. There is now one in downtown, have not been to that location, but that place is sadly not as popular as it used to be. Hush puppies are the best there though.

How much does it cost to rent bikes?

Id say leave them, walking around downtown or on the beach is much better, I'd see them as a pain downtown, too much to see on foot. I've done the bridge run, walked over it, as well as gone over on bike, just walk it as it can get windy up there.

Our thought was riding the bikes on the trails in charleston parks. Not sure how parking is downtown, but thought we would park the car with the bikes on the carrier if we want to ride them past downtown. No real plans to actually ride bikes downtown.

Leave them. Your bike parts will get stolen if you park them out of your sight for too long. I had several friends that lived in Charleston tell me they come out of the shop or whatever and their seat or front wheel was gone.

Just left there this morning after getting back from a cruise. We stayed a few nights at the Francis Marion before the cruise, really cool place. First time I have been to the city, but we really enjoyed it.

It's been a while since I lived in Charleston but I used to take people to Bowen's Island restaurant when they would come into town. The best seafood platter anywhere. I'm not sure if it's still there or not. It's on the way to Folly Beach on the right.

The parks there aren't anything special, its the plantations and gardens that are. Not for biking.
