First visit advice?

Seriously?
Men that tailgate don’t drink and like seeing girls in bikinis at the Vol,Navy.
Wow, the world has sure changed since I walked out of the Woolsworth.

TBH with my 13 year old with me, I'll probably skip that part of the festivities. I want him to see the Vol Navy, so hoping we can visit before the game.

I've got a bunch of magazines (Athlon's, Lindy's, Football Time in Tennessee) that I just don't have room for but can't stand to throw away. I will give them to you if you'd pay for shipping. Unfortunately, I'm in the Houston, TX area. If so, send me note or reply and we can get in touch. Probably have 30-40 of them and they are thick so it would cost a few dollars.

Same goes to anyone else who reads this although our new, autistic friend gets first shot at 'em.

Thank you for the offer. I will see what his mom thinks he would do with them. If she thinks he would pile them up and let them collect dust, I would rather they go to someone who would get more from them.

Knoxville has over 75 restaurants in one square mile...many within walking distance to the Holiday Inn. There could possibly be long waits on game day, so maybe carry a snack or two to tide you over. You should definitely go hit some tailgate areas so he can meet other hardcore fanatics. AND most definitely get to the stadium in time to see the Vol Walk. That is magical.
If you are staying for a couple of days...and he likes Smokey the mascot...its fun to go around camps and take photos with the ten Smokey statues that were unveiled during the Orange & White game this spring. Each one represents one of the ten Smokeys UT has had since 1953 (I may have the year wrong.)

We are getting in Friday and leaving Sunday. Im a high school history teacher so he and I are taking a day off school and leaving at 7 a.m. the day before the game, hitting a Bojangles for lunch on the way in and soaking up the experience as much as we can.

Hey, bring that Ohio U band with you. We really enjoyed their performance in Neyland a couple years back. One of the best non-P5 bands to ever perform in Neyland. Hope you and your family have a great weekend in Heaven.

Sorry, this won't be of any help, but the OP's post reminded me of my Dad and I always going to Sam and Andy's before the games when I was a kid. It became a tradition for us. I have very fond memories of us finding a grassy spot outside...just off the sidewalk to sit...eating those subs, hearing Rocky Top and watching the crowd go up and down the strip before every home game. The combination of the taste of those subs and the anticipation of entering the mighty Neyland Stadium to see my Vols whoop their opponent is just a small, but VERY enjoyable part of my childhood that I will never forget. How time flies...

RIP Sam & Andy's.

Go VOLS!!

Sun glasses, sunscreen, light clothing, shorts, seat cushions and a towel. Come early, eat at Calhoun's, and see it all. The Vol Walk, The Pride of the Southland Band, etc. Start heading towards the restrooms and concession stand with about 1:30 remaining in the 2nd qtr. But, stay well after game's end. Catch The Pride of The Southland Band playing The Tennessee Waltz. Soak it all in. Enjoy!

Calhoun's gets a lot of recommendations. I've always thought it was a great location with marginal food.
The prime rib is always tasty and the cheddar dressing on the salad is very good. My kid gets the chicken tenders and they are good. Outside of that, it’s average food. But the atmosphere is great

Definitely should consider going to LIttons restaurant in Fountain City across from the duck pond. A lot of Vols and vol fans go there. Great food but be prepared to eat a lot.

We will be there so if you see my UT truck (black with orange & white stripes...custom orange and black leather interior) stop me and you can take a pic of your son in it if you want.

I’m gonna say something you may not love, but please know it comes from a good place...

If there is ANY way you can move that trip back a week, I would highly recommend it. The Georgia State game will be a neat experience for him, but if you can swing the BYU game instead, his first experience will be:

-Neyland under the lights
-Power 5 game (sorta)
-Packed house
-Rowdy and loud fan base

He will get the true Neyland experience and remember that for the rest of his life.

If that’s not feasible I totally get it, but the crowd tends to be a little boring during beat-up games.
