First time in Athens

Georgia fans are not bad. The only fans you have to worry about are Florida fans in Gainesville(Rudest fans in the country, at least the younger ones).

DO NOT carry a drink anywhere in Athens, even if it's in a cup. The police are the worst at giving out open container tickets.

Any tips for a first time traveler to Athens for a game?

On your way through the fraternity row to the stadium, be prepared for all types of insults. However, if the Vols win, be prepared for absolute silence as you go back to your car. That sound of silence is the greatest "noise" you will ever hear...Happened to us in '98....Also, on the way home we had a sign in the rear window that said, "General Martin marches through Georgia - with Volunteers".....We got some mean looks but what an ending to the weekend!!!!!

Thought Maconga was Tech country? I passed through Macon on my way back from vacation on Sunday, wanted to stop and see the stadium but didn't have time. I plan to be there in November though.

Nowhere outside a 500 foot radius of North Ave in Atlanta is Tech country.

If you remember old Porter Stadium, you're not going to believe what's gone up across the parking lot.

Park away from the campus as close to the bypass as possible. Traffic out of Athens back towards Atlanta can be bad. I went in 08 and had no problems with their fans. It is a pretty campus so get there early and walk around some.

Their player walk comes from around the student center, under the bridge (behind the scoreboard) and into the stadium. The lone trumpeter on the bridge is pretty neat but for the most part, there's not much happening around the stadium before the game besides tailgating.

You will get barked at but it was harmless for the most part. Stay away from the frat houses and their fans are tolerable. As in most stadiums, I have found, if you are not obnoxious, you will be treated OK.

Me and my Dad went in 2000 when they finally beat us after we owned them for years. I could not imagine to may places worse than them beside UF. They were some nice people but the jerks what I really remembered. Lot of disrespect and F bombs to opposing fans. I would not go back unless I know we would destroy them and that's not this year.

I've never had problems in Athens or anywhere really although I'm sure there's obnoxious asses everywhere including Knoxville.

I've never had a problem in Athens that I didn't invite upon myself. The only rough patch I recall witnessing was walking past the fraternity houses on Milledge but I've heard they moved all but one or two of those out in recent years. I think the OP will have a good time and not get pee bombed.

Duck...

I was there in 2002. I had full beer cans thrown at my car (while I was driving it), and after the game, a group of about 8 guys try to pick a fight with me and two of my buddies.

Nope, The Taco Stand, best mexican food in town. Super fresh ingredients, no horse meat like the majority of generic mexican places.

No offense, I love Taco Stand, but their food is terrible. It's pretty much there for drunk kids to get margaritas and to have a burrito.

I went in 2002 also, and had zero problems. mild trash talk was all.

I posted this in the roll call thread but I feel it belongs here as well:

Hey Vols,

Dawg fan here just wanna help out some Athens virgins and help y'all enjoy your experience in the classic city.

Parking: parking is free at the intramural fields off of River Road on the east side of campus. You can park and a bus will shuttle you to the stadium. If you would rather park somewhere closer there are pay lots all over campus but you have to get there extremely early.

Food: Your best bet will be downtown which is right off of the north side of campus. There's tons of restaurants to walk to. If you're not downtown I recommend Cali n Titos (AWESOME Cuban food) off of Lumpkin, Blind Pig Tavern off of Jackson St., Keba is a cool sandwich place off Barnett Shoals. If you're looking for a good Friday night dinner spot Last Resort Grill is the best restaurant in Athens IMO (Clayton Street downtown), the Globe is a pub style place with great beer an awesome burgers (College Ave downtown), Porterhouse awesome steaks (downtown), Shokitini (sushi downtown), Capital Room upscale bar food(Washington St. Downtown), Dapalmas awesome Italian (Broad st. Downtown)

Bars: for gameday only a few bars will be open before the game. Magnolias is usual open by noon on gamedays, the globe (mentioned above) should be open. I you can't find a ticket I'd go to one of these to watch the game as well as the Georgia theater (haven't been but I've heard it's an awesome place to watch the game, great concert venue).
Night: if you're in college these are the bars you need to hit: General's (Dixieland sweet tea ftw), bourbon st. (Freshmen bar), city bar, blue sky, bar code, magnolias, silver dollar, boars head, jr's baitshack, on the rocks, whiskey bent, moonshine, sandbar, and that's all I can think of at the moment. Ill come back and update when I think of more.

If you're older and just want to have a few drinks without drunk sophomores then I'd hit up Allgoods (young professional crowd), Genkos (same as Allgoods), the Globe, Capital Room, Hotel indigo bar, walkers pub, treppenhuas, and for Friday afternoon around 5:30 Terrapin Beer Co. a great place to be. $10 gets you a nice beer glass and about 4 beers worth of tickets where you get to choose from about 5 house brews. Big open area with live music, corn hole, frisbee, etc.. Open til 7:30.

If y'all have any more questions just let me know. Good luck and safe travels, Vols!
