-Running back Jalen Hurd was at practice and going through drills after being knocked out of the first quarter against Vanderbilt.
-Senior running back Devrin Young (ribs) made his return to practice in a non-contact jersey after missing several weeks.
-Receiver Jason Croom looked 100% after playing sparingly in against Vandy.
-The offensive line, however, fared much better in one-on-one pass-rushing drills. It was hard to see at times with the team circled around them, but it appeared that all five starting offensive linemen (Kyler Kerbyson, Marcus Jackson, Mack Crowder, Jashon Robertson and Jacob Gilliam) won their individual battles against the defensive line. Crowder, coming off his injury, had an especially good rep in that drill.
-Trevarris Saulsberry continues to get full reps at defensive tackle as he works his way back from a knee injury suffered against UTC.
-Todd Kelly Jr. really stood out to me in the work with the secondary today. He is just a fluid player with an incredible ability to locate the football, make his move to get in position, and then high-point it and make the catch.
-Current Vol commitments Shy Tuttle and Andrew Butcher were taking in the defensive lineÂ’s work from the sidelines today, as they were in for their official visits.
-Practice began with some excitement as Butch Jones called his team into one-on-one competitions at the conclusion of the warmup/stretch period. Receivers and tight ends faced off against defensive backs and linebackers, and, safe to say, the defense won the majority of their battles with ease. The offense got off to a hot start after Vic Wharton was able to haul in a fade route over DÂ’Andre Payne, but the defense would win nine out of the next twelve matchups to claim victory over the offense by a final score of 9-4.
- (in re: one on ones) Cam Sutton had a near interception in his matchup against Josh Malone, Jakob Johnson did a very nice job of locking down Ethan Wolf in their rep – something Johnson has struggled with in recent games against Missouri and Vanderbilt – and Rashaan Gaulden made an exceptional play to knock the ball free from Von Pearson in the back of the end zone on a very nicely thrown corner route.
Been a long time coming. Sure, 6-6 isn't and never should be the standard at Tennessee, but with everything that's gone on the last few years, I'll take it.
