When the Tennessee football team returned to the practice field Monday morning to begin its second full week of preseason camp, a few of the Vols' freshmen looked noticeably different.
Tennessee freshman running back Jalen Hurd was one of the Vols' four newcomers who earned the right to remove the black stripes from their helmets before Monday morning's practice.
The black stripes they had worn on their helmets for the previous 10 days were missing.
UT coach Butch Jones announced Monday that defensive end Derek Barnett, running back Jalen Hurd, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley and tight end Ethan Wolf all had their black stripes removed before Monday morning's practice at Haslam Field., becoming the Vols' first newcomers to receive the honor.
Since last year, Tennessee has added black stripes to all first-year players' helmets before the start of preseason camp, challenging the newcomers to earn the right to have the stripes removed with their on-field performance and off-field work ethic.
Those four individuals, their stripes were removed, and it was the player staff (that decided on the players), Jones said following the Vols practice Monday morning at Haslam Field.
