Firing Fulmer was the worst mistake a program has ever made.

He would have came.....yet Tennessee went with Kiffin who had just been fired....I don’t get it.

Then you hire freakin Doofy?? Come on....it’s like they wanted Tennessee to fail.

Yeah...he was high on my list my moniker notwithstanding.

Coulda...woulda....shoulda though at this point.

I don't know any well known successful coach that comes here now with Fulmer looking over their shoulder though.

Stop defending a man that had NFL picks all over the field...including the greatest QB that will ever play here....and lost to Memphis State. The same man that lost to LSU with a shot at the national title on the line after we knocked out their starting QB and RB. The same man that lost 12-9 to Wyoming during homecoming. The same man that was beaten by Arkansas at home in 1998 and was bailed out by the most ridiculous play in Razorback history. Stop defending him.

I don’t know if “any” successful coach would unless you seriously way overpaid and made them top 5 paid coach or better.

Coaches are literally coming here to die.....why would any successful coach want to do that.

Hiring trash coaches after him was the worst mistake we ever made.

Fulmer brought in Pruitt. So the jury is still out if he has any football knowledge left in his head. So far... not looking like it.

I don't see a big name coming here anymore.

Patterson was our best shot. Gruden was and always was a joke that he strung along for the attention.

Now...UT is where guys come to collect the biggest paychecks of their lives for a few years then reap the benefit of an Athletic Department that can't negotiate their way out of a wet paper bag with a golden parachute for when they fail.

I think its about loyalty. Not sure dooley jones or pruitt have any just another school and paycheck. If it isnt that why else look not prepared sloppy and in a press conference smile joke after getting beat by a one dimensional team. I mean that bothers me...

Firing Fulmer was fine.

Shopping at Dollar General and Big Lots for coaches since then is the problem.

And we have come full circle and put Fulmer in charge again to put us in the position of yet another embarrassing loss.

Exactly !!

I love Tennessee, but if I were a coach here (and not a fan) I would leave after my first success.....then try to ride that to something....anything.

Fulmer should have been fired in 2000 after having the 25th ranked recruiting class following the NC. He thought everything would just come to him. Wrong Wanted everyone to work like heck. We're still working to find a coach.

To be fair, he lost the Wyoming game a couple days after announcing he was being fired. I don't count that one. However, losing at that 3-9 UCLA team was bad and likely what got him fired.

I'd kick back and keep collecting those extensions as long as UT would hand them out without earning them.

This program exemplifies the Peter Principle better than any in college football currently.

The LSU loss was catastrophic. The results of that loss were incalculable.

3 Facts
1.Fulmer was the last good coach we had.
2. The decline also started at the end of his tenure not after he left.
3.The league is a lot better now and has been since Meyer and Saban entered by comparison to the 90s and early 00s. Phil wasn't going to compete with either of them or UGA

I remember a Florida game where it was first and 10. Fulmer let Jamal Lewis take it up the A or B gap four times in a row only to turnover on downs. Duh! As much as I hated the Visor, he had Fulmer's number and roasted him every year. Can't spell Citrus without UT....

I would have preferred Brian Kelly over Gary Patterson. But it doesn’t matter because Troy Calhoun of Air Force was the second choice. Thank about that one for a minute. It’s really hard to comprehend just how awful of an AD Mike Hamilton really was.

Tennessee has had difficulty adjusting to the modern era. The other schools have had a better time recruiting coaches and trying new systems. This is partly due to better administration at the school.

Tennessee in late Fulmer era and early part of Dooley era thought our tradition would equal success. However, the SEC from top to bottom is better. You have to get the best talent and develop the talent. UT gets talent (maybe not the best but definitely enough that they should be in the top 20 every year) and yet they don't develop it.

My position hasn't changed; I think Fulmer deserved one more year but I wasn't completely against the firing. Hiring his replacement was the clusterf.

Also the thing is even if Fulmer had been given another year or even 2, if he didn't win an SEC Championship in the next 2 years he'd still be let go. The expectations back then were still that we should be in the National Championship. It wasn't until after a few years of Dooley and early Butch did suddenly eveyone "yearn" for the days of Fulmer. But the days of Fulmer past 2001 were only acceptable compared to Dooley/early Butch, not acceptable for 2008 Fulmer. I mean Butch Jones basically got back to 2006-2007 Fulmer minus winning the East and even then he had it on a silver platter and botched it.

Kelly wasn’t a real option then. Maybe he should have been, but with just 2 seasons at Cincy......it just wasn’t. Had it “first” happened after 09 it would have been......at least a real option.

Troy - Lane.......I guess the lure of a washed up one time great DC was too much.

Don’t get me wrong. Monte was great.....but probably well past that once he came to Tennessee.

Still Patterson has had 7, 11 win or better seasons over the past 12.

How was he not a real option? He won the Big East and went to the Orange Bowl in his second season. He interviewed for the job and was considered the favorite by multiple national writers. Kelly said that he was even getting cards from every real estate agent in Knoxville. I’m not saying that Kelly would have definitely take the job, he might have been holding out hope fo ND, but he was certainly a realistic option.
