Wasn’t even that good of a defense, we had to slow our offense down so much because of Nico that our opponents had less possessions.
Our best players were mostly transfers or 5th year players from Pruitt. Banks seems to struggle teaching fundamentals (like tackling)

The defense was noticeably worse once Pili went down for the season.

I’m almost reaching the point of not caring anymore. I hope they figure it out. My initial reaction is they need to stack top 5 classes multiple years in a row and that will fix it but that hasn’t happened here since Fulmer.
Unfortunately it won’t. Lea is doing it with a bunch of 3 stars. Coaching matters.

This is an ignorant take and I don’t understand why so many people here believe it. He’s done a great job with McCoy, Gibson, Hood, and Redmond. It’s not his fault that the DC has our corners lining up 15 yards off the ball. Our problems on defense are schematic, not play development and technique.
Sorry, he's a secondary coach with a history of fielding subpar secondaries, over two stops here. He's also "owns" the inability to play even a functional zone defense. All the names mentioned may well be performing well despite the secondary coaching staff...due to personal athleticism. Not like we haven't seen that before.

I believe it has more to do with the talent. He didn't forget how to coach in a year. And recruiting is different with NIL. Recruiting and transfer portal needs to be better. All coaches
Which is what i didn't understand. They knew there were going to be holes to fill and they didn't do anything to get better. They actually let some guys leave. I would love to know what their thinking logic was behind that

Honestly...you may be the only person on this board...hell even in east tn, that is defending Martinez.

Willie...is this you?

Banks needs to go.

Did not realize just how bad we are this year until this morning and read...117th in total defense ranking in all of CFB!!!

14th or lower in almost every defensive category in the SEC. Only one we are even close to the top is turnovers.
But, we lost McCoy 11 months ago..

All these teams changing coaches this year is there not one DC on any of these teams you would rather have vs Banks? Is the Auburn DC worse than Banks or Florida's DC.

I would take Auburns DC - Durkin - over Banks any day.

If Golesh is smart, he throws as much as he can at Durkin to stay.

Haha I know I know but our top 4 corners are maybe the best top 4 corners in the country. I mean our CB3 was one of the highest graded corners in the SEC and is a finalist for the Thorpe award. Tough to do if your coach sucks.

Banks defensive scheme is to keep everything in front of you hoping for a turnover or worst case scenario is a FG. Worked when we could score at will. It no longer works.

It is clear that Tennessee needs a new defensive coordinator. The defense has collapsed this season with constant missed tackles and blown assignments, and there has been no improvement from week to week. What makes it worse is Bank's lack of recruiting effort and almost zero use of the transfer portal. Every successful SEC program reloads through the portal, but Tennessee is falling behind while Banks sits quiet. Colton Hood was a baller; but we can thank CJH and Coach Martinez for him.

High school recruiting on the defensive side has no momentum either, and game day adjustments are almost nonexistent. Opponents expose the same weaknesses every week and nothing changes.
Tennessee has put too much into this program to settle for a coordinator who cannot build consistent success. If the standard is championships, then this level of defense is nowhere close.
It is time for Tennessee to make a change.

I can’t answer a question with a question.. I ask first why hasn’t he been a d coordinator maybe he’s a career position coach and a damn good one I guess I’m answering yours also
Okay but our DL got pushed around at times this year also and routinely over pursued on the pass rush and took bad angles at the QB. I like Rodney Garner and am glad he is here but it is interesting how he seems to be impervious to criticism while the entirety of the remaining defensive staff gets blasted.
