How is that different than the old dynamic, where guys get paid different amounts under the table? Do you think the linemen protecting Cam Newton got paid as much as he did?

All this has done is taken things that were happening in the shadows and moved it out into the open.

Well that's a dumb take. You don't think OL in college will block for a guy when they're getting paid $50k to do it? How many college jobs pay $50k? Even in the NFL, QBs generally make quite a bit more than the average OL.

Well thats a stupid reply! Greed is a powerful thing. While $50K is a huge amount this year, because its new income, it will seem like a lot less next year when the running back is making millions. College is more or less a team sport but this is now pro football where it's geared toward getting mine. Money will control every aspect of this and no one will think they got enough.

It’s always favored certain teams, that won’t change. The only change is the kids are getting paid now instead of just the programs and NCAA. The money these kids are getting is still just a drop in the bucket right now.

Why does wanting to make money = greed? Are you greedy because you'd like to try and make more money at your job?

Money ultimately controls every aspect of almost every endeavor in life. Always has and always will. With respect to money's influence in college sports, people who haven't seen this until now must have had some serious scales over there eyes that are falling off now that it is out in the open.

Of course everyone wants more money. The difference between 2 years ago and now is they have been given 2 vehicles to gain leverage the NIL+transfer portal. This will accelerate the process X 10 and simple greed will take over.

The value is mostly tied back to its entertainment value, so it has to continue to deliver "fan delight" at the appropriate level. Fan delight may be even greater under the transfer portal system, or it may not.

I will say I'm glad it's not my money. I contribute absolutely nothing to any of it.

Not a NHL fan myself but perfectly aware that some of the most ardent/diehard fans follow that sport. About two labor agreements ago, it came to light that the TV money didn’t match the demand…so the money required to seal the deal decreased. Same thing happened in NASCAR (again mucho passion and loyalty). So “fan delight” is well and good but the MARKET is undefeated. Money keeps going up for college football and no sign of that trending downwards. As long as we’re arguing on a COLLEGE FAN board I don’t see that changing.

I mean...he's asking for a raise. Does that mean he's greedy? Maybe, maybe not. Does he deserve one?

Have you ever asked for a raise, or thought you were underpaid? If so, did you consider yourself greedy in that moment?

Whats your definition of greed? He made a deal (3 times what he would have accepted), he then saw another player get a better deal so he is leaving the team, this is greed. You think this builds team unity? If they meet his demand will everyone else hit the transfer portal? Is this really same as it was before we are just now seeing it clearly. Its possible but I don't think so.

An uncontrolled, over-the-top desire for something, especially if getting it comes at the direct expense of someone else and your desire for more leads you yourself down a path of destruction.

When someone else wants more, it's greed. When you want more, it's self-interest or trying to get what you're worth. If he wants more and someone somewhere thinks he's worth that and willing to pay it, then good for him. If you left your current employer to join another who paid you more, is that greed?

Sure it is. Pitt could probably scrounge up enough cash to match USC's offer. They just might not have enough for their other players after that.

Besides, even if you had a cap on NIL deals, wouldn't a player still have an incentive to go to USC over Pitt? USC is an incredibly desirable place to be even if NIL didn't exist. It seems impossible to create a system like Kanell describes where a player could be "protected" by the school that developed him.

I don't think they CAN. Different leagues apart money wise. Hence my opinion on the subject and Narduzzi's frustration.
