It does take 7 yrs, maybe more to rebuild the mess he took over at Tennessee into a championship caliber team in the SEC....

I know...it didn't take Freeze that long, and it didn't take Sumlim that long... they haven't won anything yet either.

Taking over the pitiful roster he inherited was a challenge. Tennessee may have had 10 quality SEC players on the roster in his jr and soph classes that he inherited....Maybe 10

If you haven't noticed Ole Miss is a bigger dumpster fire than UT right now

That's why all coaching contracts are 7 year deals.

So I guess it's safe to say building a program and building a winning program go hand in hand. Butch has been here 4 years and certainly will be here for a 5th one. Would you consider his program a winning one?

Compared to where we was........yes, steady improvement each year and overall better (cleaner) program. And for the record there is no coach in the country that is perfect. Our Butch isn't any different from any of the rest, but he is our coach and we're in better shape today than we was this time 2012......

I guess everyone has forgotten how much of a joke UT was when Butch took over but he took over from scratch. Ground zero. And he has succeeded in making UT relevant again. Can't remember the last time I was pissed about losing 3 games

I agree. I felt a couple years ago that we were still one coach away from being national title contenders. There's very few coaches that win national championships. Outside of Chizik in 2010, the college football world has been dominated by Meyer and Saban the last decade.

The bad news is no championship level coach takes over a dumpster fire of a program

The good news is we are no longer a dumpster fire and will be in a position to get a championship level coach if things don't work out with Butch in the next couple years

No. A national championship is the crowning jewel of a winning program. You don't just have a winning team but not a winning program. That's putting cart before the horse.

Would you consider these programs winning programs?

TCU
Oregon
Clemson
Michigan State
UCLA
Boise St
Wisconsin

2 years is actually the norm..bob stoops 2nd yr nat'l title after 5-5-1/3-8/5-6/4-8 the 4 yrs before he got there

carroll 2nd yr orange bowl win top 5 finish after 23 losses in the 4 yrs before he arrived

harbaugh contending f nat'l title yr 2..

this talk about it taking 4-5 yrs is retarded

How many of those coachs' new teams had 0 (zero) starters on both O line and D line with any starting experience?

Butch inherited a dumpster fire compared to what these guys got. None of those schools went through what UT did.

yeah..good one..that was the only one I had in mind when I posed the question, and his inclusion is arguable though I would agree with it. Can't think of another though in the past 40-50 yrs though there might be one or two..

Mark Richt, Bryan Kelly, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Charlie Strong, Mike DuBose,
