Finebaum

does anyone know how rare it REALLY is for a coach to have what can be described as a successful tenure at a historical top 10-15 program and NOT have it rolling by year 3? I mean...I would almost say it is unheard of.

Look at the coaches at ut peer schools who meet that definition..coaches who replaced someone fired for lack of results at a historical top 10-15 program..who are we talking about?

in some order penn st michigan ohio st okla texas florida tennessee alabama usc fsu miami notre dame nebraska.

saban? meyer? Carroll? Stoops? Harbaugh? The right coach NEVER is a slow rebuild. I need to make a post that shows how what butch is saying is just bull****

If UT hired a brand name coach and gave him the budget to hire the best coaches a 3-4 year rebuild would have been reasonable. But UT went cheap. The no name coach with the cheap staff has to go the long route. To support my argument look how many fans recognize we need better coaches. So give the guy 2 more years.

Very serious question. What does he know about how a football program should be salvaged from losing to KY,VU,UF,UGA,SC and Missouri? He doesn't know and honestly I dont think that he cares. So his comments carry no weight with me.

He stuck up for Tennessee during the off season, even said they were a playoff contender. Now him and the rest of the national media outlets are all saying the same things. The talent is there on paper this is coaching malpractice at its best.

Watch this video, this is the national perception of the program right now, which like it or not impacts recruiting.

Video: ESPN discusses whether or not Butch Jones is in trouble at Tennessee

Worth repeating: "The right coach NEVER is a slow rebuild."

So people are pissed off because Finebaum said something true? Come on. That comment IS garbage. It doesn't take 7 years to build a program at one of the most historically successful programs in the nation, in a division that has been weak for years.

Since when does being a moderator make you a dictator?

If I was a dictator then your post wouldn't exist.

It was simply a question about why this months old quote is relevant again. Seems you can't or won't answer that so you're now attempting to score cheap likes by insulting me.

It does take 7 yrs, maybe more to rebuild the mess he took over at Tennessee into a championship caliber team in the SEC....

I know...it didn't take Freeze that long, and it didn't take Sumlim that long... they haven't won anything yet either.

Taking over the pitiful roster he inherited was a challenge. Tennessee may have had 10 quality SEC players on the roster in his jr and soph classes that he inherited....Maybe 10

I don't think any of us excepted Butch to win a NC in 4 years. I didn't but after, supposedly, 2 top 5 recruiting classes, I did except Butch to compete for a SECe championship. 2015 team was a very good team. Butch lost to Oky., Arky., and UF that year because of his poor in game decisions and clock management then he blames the team for not knowing how to finish games.
From what we have seen in 2016, It appears that the program is going downhill and that should not be happening.

But all of those guys are gone. This is Butch's roster. By year seven he will have had at least 3 full classes come and go.

That's the concern, the program appears to be going downhill.

When you are constipated and finally take a dump and then flush it; what is left that doesn't quite go down but just circles around the bowl is Paul Finebaum!

I'm willing to wait and see. If we decline significantly next season then I think it's time for a change.

When Butch says it takes 7 yrs to build a program he's not talking about taking 7 yrs to win. Building a program means building a culture, identity and of course sustaining success. You don't just do that in 3-5 yrs. It's too early to tell if a coach can maintain his program's success before that 7th yr. Several coaches have won titles in their 2nd/3rd years but a winning team is different from a winning program

Damn.........if we had kept Dooley we would almost be to the 7 year mark and would be a championship team.

It boggles my freaking mind that people would actually believe that it takes 7 years to establish a dominant program.

Please take a look at any top program today and give me the example that it took the current head coach 7 freaking years to be a national powerhouse?

It should take no longer than 4 at the MOST. That's 4 years of your own recruiting and coaching. You can't blame Dooley anymore. His players are long long gone.

No. A national championship is the crowning jewel of a winning program. You don't just have a winning team but not a winning program. That's putting cart before the horse.

That's why all coaching contracts are 7 year deals.

Well and if you don't get it done, you're out. Look at Charlie Strong at Texas; they want his head now. Maybe, just maybe he will get another year by squeaking by & upsetting Baylor. I think he is in year 3. Look at how Harbaugh has brought Michigan back. So, in this era it's get it done or get the boot. Not saying it's right, but. Also look at Louisville getting the job done.

Exactly. That pitch got weaker every year he has been here til now. Currently it doesnt exist. Man up and call it what it is.
