In an interview published today in the Tennessean and online (Paul Finebaum: Vols), Paul Finebaum made the following observations concerning the current state of Tennessee football: "I buy the hype that there's great buzz and interest. Butch Jones has done a great job. I'm not one of those who thinks Tennessee is automatic to win the SEC East. I think they have a chance. I think the program is back. I think the program is knocking on the door of greatness."

After the last seven years I'm kind of content with knocking on the door of decent or not sucking out loud.

That's funny, it was really hot today since apparently Hell just froze over...never would have expected that comment from him!

Whether it reflects playing to the proverbial home crowd, as opposed to the Alabama-based contingent of his former radio audience, I was still somewhat surprised by these comments, given his history of snide remarks about our collective alma mater. With respect to his time at Tennessee, Finebaum said that "The biggest game every year was Alabama and it was fairly sad those four years to see that game. I loved my time at Tennessee. . . . Tennessee provided me with a career and I'll never forget that and I'm always appreciative of that."

Whether these remarks reflect his true opinion in his heart of hearts, we will probably never know. The views expressed by his public persona have, in the past, been so overwhelmingly negative that I have been inclined to regard him as "Benedict Finebaum."

With respect to Josh Dobbs, Finebaum said that, "For all the bad in college sports--and I'm a purveyor of some of that--I think he's really representative of the good. If he couldn't play, it'd be one thing, but he plays well, extremely well."

We have a legit shot at the Playoffs with a couple of breaks this year.

I don't think so, Eddie. I don't think we get to 12-1 regular season + SEC CG in 2015, and that's about the price of admission to the playoffs.

But I do think at the top end, just about all the breaks going our way, we could get to 11-2 (10-2 regular season and a miraculous win in Atlanta), and just barely miss the playoffs.

More likely is we go 9-3 and just barely miss Atlanta, or just barely make it. That's where I think we'll most likely end up, but it's gonna be really close.

Worst case, we're 8-4 and have broken a couple of those nasty streaks.

No matter which way it goes, it's so hugely great to be back in the football season with our Vols (hey, a major pre-season poll has been published and we're less than a weak from fall camp, I'm counting us as "in the season" hehe).

Go Vols!

p.s. One gets the impression that with Finebaum, it's all about building viewership and he knows Vol Nation is a lucrative target population. I don't believe he's sincere for one minute, no matter who he's touting.

That should absolutely be our ambition.

We might not make it. We do need a couple of breaks. But we could legitimately win the SEC for the first time in a long time.

Everyone hates on Finebaum but all he's done is call it like it is. He bashed on Dooley from the beginning and our fans rallied around our HC, ignoring the obvious signs that Paul pointed out. He held Butch's feet to the flames for the Vandy 13 and UF 14 games, which he deserved. Funny thing last year, Ole Miss played @ Vandy week 2. SEC Network did gameday there. 3 of the analysts said it would be a close game and Ole Miss should watch out. Paul was the only one who laughed at all of them and said it would be over by the half.

Great post...but it's much easier to whine and play the "everyone hates us" card.
