Finebaum picks Tennessee over Oklahoma

FWIW...Finebaum predicted Alabama would roll OU in the Sugar Bowl. I am going to wait until I have seen OU in our first game before I make any prediction on the game in Knoxville. We are a real mystery right now. We have a lot of talent and the new coaches and schemes would make one think we would be improved but after the bitter disappointment that was 2014 I simply have not formed an opinion on just how good we will be.

Very true he did and as bad as I hate the Bammers it was obvious early on in that game they didn't give a crap about being there. I loved watching OU beat them up and down the field but if that had been a playoff or NC game I would venture to say it would have been a different outcome. OU is basically breaking in a new system with a new OC and last I saw they weren't settled on a QB yet. We really should beat OU at home, really is no reason we shouldn't not to mention we are already favored in that game. If we can come out early, smash them in the mouth and get a 2 score lead then we could win by double digits. But if we fall behind early and they take the crowd out of it then who knows. But I can honestly see us winning 30-20, 28-17 or something like that. JMO though. I could be way off and we get a beating like last year but honestly think we win that game in Neyland and it hopefully sets the tone for the rest of the year.

Had Oklahoma and Bama been in a NC playoff game, I don't think the outcome would have been any different. The schemes that OU ran against Bama were purely simple and genius at the same time.

I don't give much credence to recruiting class rankings because it doesn't start nor end there. Texas was steps ahead in recruiting classes vs OU, but were getting their collective asses handed to them in the annual RRS. This game will be a much more of a 'game' than last years and here is why I think it can go either way. The Vols want to prove that they are on the way up. OU want's to prove that are not on the way down. It is two proud programs that want to get back to the status they feel they deserve and the only way to do that is, well..., win. Not just conference games but EVERY game. The advantage for talent I would have to give to TN, based on what I have seen, but I am not completely sold just yet that the talent in Knoxville is any better than the talent in Norman. Sept 12th will tell the tale. To me, Josh Dobbs is one year removed from being TCU's Trey Boykin. More experience will just make him that much more dangerous. Mayfield gets my nod as the starter at QB in Norman. He reminds me of Heupal in 2000. He has greater speed than Heupal, but Heupal understood the game as his father was a HS/College coach. That kind of thinking in a QB cannot be understated/under-valued. Accuracy seems to be the achilles heel for both Dobbs and OU's QBs right now. With the addition of Mixon to Perine and Ross, OU could have the equivalent of Hurd/Kamara/whomever for the VOLS. The one thing not spoken about in this matcup, which makes me even more excited to see other than the players on both sides, will be the addition of asst. coaches to both staffs. I think both HC's will get a real look at the hires they made during the off season and how that will work out. I'm not going to call the final score just yet. Although only one regular season game stands between the Sept 12th showdown for both teams, anything can happen until then. It stands to be a great game, one that could be talked about for years or forgotten by next year. Hope its the former, regardless of the score. I just enjoy some feetball.

I don't predict games, I just watch them. The OU-BAMA Sugar Bowl was just another result of SEC (Saban in particular) inability to handle up tempo offenses. If they think they lost because they didn't want to be there that makes them an even worse football team than I thought. Lots of talent, no character.

Regarding the OU QB situation...don't fall in love with the Mayfield/Knight competition. Soph Cody Thomas may sneak in and sit them both down.

I have said all along that this home/home reminded me of our home/home with FSU in 2010-2011.We hammered the Seminole in Norman. They were in their first year of a new D (Mark Stoops) & our hurry up was just too much for them to handle. In Tallahassee the next year it was a battle. We finally prevailed but it took a late 4th rally to win. I see the game in Knoxville the same but I am not at all sure of a similar outcome. When we played them in Tallahassee it was there first sell out in years. It was a raucous crowd to say the least.

Great analysis. I appreciate the objective point of view. It should be an awesome atmosphere when OK comes to Knoxville

I agree with this post. This game should be close. The Vols have great freshman and sophomore talent but is thin with upperclassmen starting (that concerns me) OU has a good blend of talent in all classes. Vols should have an advantage playing in front of a huge crowd in Neyland. This should be a tough fight to the finish type game. Being perfectly honest with myself, I have no clue who will win which makes this game so intriguing. Hope Sooner fans enjoy their trip to Knoxville. Who knows, they may be conference mates in the future

OU's defensive front is still full of studs, so until Tennessee's OLine can actually stop more than 2 guys rushing in, I won't be placing any bets. I do think the score will be much improved on both fronts, however, I won't be dishing out any trash talk with my OU brother in law quite yet either.
