Where is over there?
"Seriously" do you know the facts. Let's hear them.
Finebomb plays his audience to the hilt, and Billy Bob and Jim Ed eat it up. He's actually a genius, a UT grad that is making millions pandering to Bammers by slamming his alma mater.
FWIW, I wouldn't piss on Finebomb if he was on fire, but he found the easiest and most gullible venue to riches, Bammer fans.
I was referring to you. You were implying that any non-fulmerite resented the fact that Fulmer but Bama on probation.
I, nor anyone else I know who wanted Phil fired, wanted him fired for that reason. We did not like the on-field product or his attitude of "working like heck."
I have no problem with him screwing over the bammers. The only ones who were really ruined over it were the Alabama fans, hence my jokingly questioning who you are actually a fan for, since you seem to be confused.
short version:
johnny pissed big money off (his fault). "i'm johnny majors - screw you".
johnny was hell on assistants and, to a degree, players.
johnny had a real bad year - 88.
johnny lost to bama alot.
johnny's drinking and eating habits led to him needing heart surgery.
phil took a talented returning cast and exceeded expectations with a loose, player-friendly style.
johnny, seemingly envious of phil's growing popularity, rushed back to the sidelines and we lost several games we should've won.
phil, sensing his time was now, got together with the money johnny had scorned and threatened to take his ball and a good portion of the assistants to clemson.
johnny was gone, baby, gone.
was it scandalous? not terribly, depending on your loyalty. like recently, it was time anyway. can i see why johnny won't refer to phil or doug by name? definitely
This is a pretty good Cliff's Notes summary of what happened. The only thing I would add is that whether you think Fulmer behaved dishonorably depends on whether you think Fulmer owed any personal loyalty to Majors at all. Maybe your boss is an ass, sure, but does that make it okay to go over his head to the board of directors and campaign for his job while he's still recovering from heart surgery? Especially if you owe your own career to the guy in the first place?
As I recall, about 95 percent of the people on campus at the time felt like Fulmer stabbed Majors in the back, but about 95 percent also felt like making the change was the right move. It was an ugly situation where nobody was really in the right.

Fulmer won two big upsets when Johnny was recuperating and Majors couldn't stand it....he rushed his return, then lost three straight conference games to Arkansas, Alabama, and South Carolina. The Alabama loss was 7 in a row and put Majors record against the Tide at 4-13. So we had a situation of Majors, who should have been fired at the end of 1988; versus an up and comer Fulmer that had the Vols playing above their heads.......
