I know most of you don't care about Finebaum but from time to time if he's on I'll listen.

Last night he answered a caller commenting about the USCe womens BB coach, Martin. He offered that "Currie fired him". Then corrected himself and said "from the horses mouth, Currie told Martin to find another job so I'll take that as being fired".

Question I have is: Is Currie that inept to have fired a championship coach? If so, are we in for a really bad run? What was the positive for bringing him here and exactly who brought him here?

Comment: I don't know if he was behind the fireing of Fulmer but if he was, I do agree with him.

(Correct me if I'm wrong on the BB coach being named Martin)

This has been discussed a lot, but I'm of the group that thinks Currie was looking out for his players when he made the decision. They didn't want to play for Martin anymore bc of his temperament. When Martin didn't respond to Currie's attempts to communicate, Best decision for the University was to cut ties.

I heard he popped a kid's balloon at Disney World, then cut him in line at Space Mountain

There's already a long thread somewhere on here discussing the rumors about what happened with the current South Carolina's men's coach, when he was under Currie, somewhere else. Kansas State?

Dawn Staley is the championship women's coach at South Carolina. I'm not aware of any connection with Currie.

You're talking about the men's coach. This story has become completely overblown. Frank Martin was completely hated by his players at KSU and got himself run out of town. The idea that he was somehow a diamond in the rough "championship coach" is revisionist history.

The idea that he was somehow a diamond in the rough "championship coach" is comical. 3 weeks ago, he was the coach of a team that had fallen apart down the stretch and was going nowhere.

Exactly, they even complained at USCe about his temper early on but, to his credit, he has calmed down since then. Guy was outta control at Kstate though.

Martin is the SCar men's bball coach, not women's.

Let's let this go until we've at least given Currie a chance. Insofar as Martin: I doubt that Currie, nor practically any other AD in the country, has the nads like former NCAA baseball championship coach & SCjr. AD Ray Tanner's got. He knows what it takes for his teams to win, he walks the walk and is no-nonsense about absolutely nobody breaking team rules or doing ANYTHING unethical. Every coach respectfully calls him Coach Tanner, so let's don't be surprised that, after ol' hot head Frank had run off a couple of players, and had one or two more appearing to cut bait...........the law according to Coach Tanner was applied. Martin capitulated and, voila! His player relations dynamics suddenly matured. If Currie runs a tight ship like Tanner, then UT sports will, finally, re-capture its old magic and all will be well. I, for one, am not overly optimistic that this will be the case, but giving the man enough space to ply his craft is, IMHO, the best route to take.

So, what your saying is that we need somebody like ol' Coach Tanner. If so, I agree.

Curriemade Martin suspend a kid for a NCAA tourney game because he took some sort of financial benifit. It turned out to be something small like someone paid for him and his family a meal but at the time Currie didn't know that. Martin said it was fine Currie wanted to investigate to make sure, and that's that.

I know it's a tad different but it does sound similar to the Kevin O'Neill and Isiah Victor issue here

Martin does have some similarities to Bobby Knight. Knight was a great basketball coach who often alienated his own players and shot himself in the foot. Knight won 3 championships, but he also probably lost a few with his abrasive personality. Keep in mind that at one point, Knight could've had Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Isiah Thomas all on the same team, but both Magic and Bird left for elsewhere because of Knight's personality.

So I still don't know how to evaluate Currie's experience with Martin. It seems like a mistake in some regards, but Martin's abrasive personality may have been creating many issues as well. It's possible that Martin has learned from the experience and grown as a result. No doubt he was a great basketball coach both before and after.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Florida hired this man for their female football team named Spurrier. This fulmer man beat this women's coach. Currie was responsible for none of that. Just correct me if I'm wrong.
