I think our defense is about ready to explode. This young talent is about ready to use Indiana ST as a tune up game and explode into stars.

He did not shed a block, GT blocker completely whiffed and ran past him. He then proceeded to dive at Taylor knocking Taylor off the QB and allowing the pass to be attempted.

He did not knock Taylor off Marshall. Taylor took Marshall all the way to the ground, which would not have happened if Jumper had knocked Taylor off the QB. Jumper actually launched at Marshall a second after Taylor hit Marshall, driving him backwards, so that Jumper landed went behind Taylor. He may have bumped him as he went by, but not enough to effect Taylor's tackle. And Jumper definitely had no effect on whether or not Marshall was able to throw the ball, which he did at almost a 45* angle to the ground with Taylor wrapped around his lower body.

I think we've all been waiting to see Darrell Taylor, I know I have. Hoping GaTech was his coming out party on the way to an All-SEC type season. That was a great, game-saving play he made on Monday, can't wait to watch this kid do great things going forward. Honestly believe he can be great here.
I honestly didn't expect much from him when he committed. We had K Phillips, Barnett of course,Vereen, L Lewis and many others at the time. I sure am glad he has emerged!!! It seems he has surpassed K Phillips and that's a shame, IMO!

I don't care if they tripped over their own two feet. Everyone from Ga Tech who had the ball on that play was tackled short of the goal line and that's all that matters.

FWIW: even though Micah Abernathy's tackle was unnecessary, he came from the other side of the line to make that play. A still shot taken while the QB still had the ball while being a couple steps away from Taylor shows Abernathy approaching the LOS over the left guard of GA Tech's line. From there he made it all of the way to the point of impact with the RB who caught the pass on a bounce. Then after arriving, he was strong enough to get the RB down with the ball short of the goal line. If the ball had been complete, this would go down as one of the greatest defensive plays in UT history.
I didn't realize he came that far. Really tells you about his effort and the teams effort on defense. It was a tough game fir the defense but they never hung their head! Made one play and won the game!

Then Micah Abernathy (DB) hogtied the RB who "caught" the pass before he could reach the goal line. A heads-up play, though ultimately unnecessary, as the pass proved to be incomplete (hit the ground before caught).

That had me high-fiving (is that a word?) everyone around me - Abernathy saying no way no how y'all are gonna score!

I like watching it on a loop...

If he pitches it, that's 2 points, despite the whiffed blocks.

But it's nothing to whine about. A pitch is just a pass. Folks throw incomplete passes all the time and nobody claims it was some miracle that the play didn't work. If a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass a hopping. Tennessee deserved to win because GT could close the deal on any of the prior 10 some odd opportunities we had to win.

Good game Tennessee.

Darryl Taylor (DE) and Colton Jumper (LB) were the two who tackled the Ga Tech QB. 90% Taylor, he had the fellow wrapped up pretty well before Jumper arrived, and Jumper kind of overshot the tackle.

Stupid refs would not had called it but they had guys illegally downfield and he may have crossed the line of scrimmage too.

I've liked his attitude since the Battle at Bristol and 2-3 interviews since late summer practice. This unit can bond as the season goes on.2 seniors starting this year, Vick and TK if I'm not mistaken. Good talent on the way also. Sorry, Mosely and Martin, and McDowell,Jumper may also be seniors too. Anyway we have a lot to look forward to on defense I think. More players learning their roles and other roles as well. GT likely could have beaten at least 8 SEC teams judging by the way they played Monday,IMO. WE gotta get leads and let less experienced players into this game. K-mac getting 80 snaps and others playing that much will lead to more injuries and that's CBJ's fault.

Honestly right before Marshall was hit if he optioned the ball to Benson he would have walked in. Glad we left there with a W

I don't know about that, Beej and NY. All the flow was out toward the pitch man. McDowell was entirely unblocked, with no hat coming toward him. And he's fast, as well. I think he'd have run down the pitch man and pushed him out of bounds a good 2-3 yards short of the goal line.

But that's all just supposition. We can't know for sure. All we can know is: what happened, happened.

Good game, Georgia Tech.

Yep... They had linemen in the endzone when he threw the ball.

Agreed 82-JP, Marshall saw the pitch covered and that's when he attempted to halt and turn it back inside, and got hammered. Ball game.

Marshall should have pushed outside instead of inside, at that point it would have been 1 UT defender on 2 GT guys. If he went after the QB he would have pitched for an easy two and if he would have gone after the pitch man Marshall would have walked in. Marshall admitted he made a mistake trying to cut inside, he should have let the play develop. But UT won the game and that's all that really matters.

Also if they would have reviewed the pitch and said it was a completion (which it wasn't) they would have re ran the down because they blew the play dead. So even though he didn't get in after the pitch the play was already blow dead.

Good luck for the rest of the season!

Go back and watch, no one was on the pitch man yet and he cut inside which he shouldn't have done. You should always follow the OL hips, he didn't do that. That play should have been stretched out. There was only one guy for UT on the outside and he would have had to choose between Marshall and the pitch man.

That is not correct because McDowell had followed the play to the outside and looked to be in good position if the pitch had been made and had no blocker on him. It was still probably Marshall's better option than what he did, but all fans of both sides can do is speculate on what would have happened had he made the pitch. But good luck to thee jackets the rest of the way. Marshall was very impressive on a national stage in his first start.

Ok, so my point is if Marshall continued outside the only person out there that was free was McDowell. Mcdowell would have taken either Marshall or the pitch man. If he takes the pitch man then Marshall cuts up field on the backside of his OL hip, he cut upfield on the frontside of the OL where the defender was. The OL had the guy who made the tackle sealed inside where Marshall went, that's why marshall should have styed outside. If McDowell would have taken Marshall then Marshall would have made the pitch, and no one was there for the pitch man at that point. That's how that play is designed, it was just not executed. Here's a picture, as you can see if he stayed outside there was only one free man to take either Marshall or the pitch man. I will say it wouldn't have been a 100% 2 point conversion, but should have had a way better chance.

Maybe.

McDowell is the defender you're talking about. So he's the guy who would've had to choose. And his assignment was the pitch man. So if Marshall had gone outside his lead blocker, and if Marshall had then kept the ball, McDowell would probably have been in the wrong place to stop him.

But you're assuming that the lead blocker (pulling left guard) would've been able to keep Darrell Taylor off the QB. Evidence from that very play says that Taylor was doing really well staying with the play in spite of 2 attempts to block him. So chances are good he'd have shrugged off the LG's block and still been on the QB at about the 5 yard line.

We can't know any of these hypotheticals for sure. But I'm having a tough time seeing ANY way Ga Tech could've scored on that 2-pt attempt. We had it covered with a well-called and very well executed defensive play.

Good game, fellas.

I get it wouldn't be 100% a completed but it would have been a lot better chance imo. You should always follow the backside of your OL hips and he didn't do that. But I don't see how your finding to hard to see GT get that if he stayed outside. All that would have had to happen was the OL make the block and then Marshall make the right read for the pitch or keep.
