It didn't in this situation, but the rule is there because it would in others. It's not up to the judgement of the refs whether to let a play go on after the whistle. Once it's blown, the play is dead/over. Nothing that happens after counts. You can't score when a play is not in progress.
I'm glad we won, but not happy that it happened in this way.
It's going to be discussed ad nauseam on every major sport show whether it's television or radio. Yes, there were two blown calls and the result of the game would have been the same if none of this occurred, but they will make it very clear that the overturning of the call due to the review was the much larger error.
I guess it doesn't bother me nearly as much that it happened this way. Ideally, the refs would have called it right on the field and UT would have won. As it was, they screwed up twice and UT won. No one can claim that Vandy got hosed on that play or UT didn't deserve to win because of that play.
Actually, he asked the guy who marked the play. That's the only guy who could have definitely said one way or the other. I imagine he looked up at the jumbotron, saw how absolutely horrible his call was, and denied that he blew the whistle.
In the end.... the play was called exactly as it should have been.
We had to cheat to beat Vandy. Everybody watching the game on TV heard that whistle at least three times. I suspect the SEC officials erred on the side of having two more bowl eligible teams.
The SEC disagrees
