Say what you want, but UT did a better job against the Gators' offense than any other team this season.
Let's be honest. The band barely had time to get off the field before Florida found themselves with a 17 point lead against a horrible offensive football team. They could have hung 40 on us if they hadn't taken their foot off the gas.

Not to mention they never really hit their offensive stride until the second half at Arkansas.

No kidding. They were basically running out the clock halfway through the second quarter.

"For a player to attend Florida and not leave with a degree and a national championship is an absolute tragedy, a travesty.''

Good sweet Lord, hubris is ugly. If Meyer wins a national championship every four years for the rest of his career, I'll eat a hat. He wouldn't have his first if USC hadn't wet the bed against UCLA; he owes this one to a one-in-a-generation player. Meyer is a great coach and he's built a great program, but if he seriously thinks it's going to be a "tragedy" and a "travesty" if he doesn't win a national championship every three years, he's going to be severely disappointed.

Sometimes it sucks to have his kind of success this early. The expectations for the future are going to be absolutely ridiculous in Gainesville.

for real how can you make a prediction or a promise like that! players like tim tebow dont come around very often! it's not just the way he plays the game but his leadership you dont find that everyday

He could have a really good team every year for the next ten years, but still see the math not work out for him to even get back into the title game. So much is contingent upon what happens elsewhere in the country. Setting the bar high is impressive, but nobody's going to win a national championship for every recruiting class. Ridiculous.

Exactly. I traveled across the country to watch this game, and it was the most disappointing 5 minutes of football I have ever seen. The game was over before it started. Meyer just got bored and ran out the clock.

If anyone thinks we had ANY chance against UF, you have drank too much Nyquil. The UF team we faced, and the one that played for the NC, are day and night. They could have beaten us by as many as they wanted, and as noted above, their offense hadn't even hit their stride yet.

Now, here's the difference in UT and UF...look at the improvement UF made from beginning to end, and the non-improvement from UT. That, more than anything, spoke volumes about the state of the programs.

Confusing.

Writer 32 has completly carried water and made excuses for Chavis and the UT Defense since 2002.

Griff and a few more "writers" completely failed to expose and report on the state of our football program, as they were in bed with the coaches. The previous staff lead Griff and Hyams around like blind sheep, throwing them "insider" information and stories.

What a joke our local writers have been...

Yeah, that Tennessee defense was a real joke this year...And that Jerod Mayo? Man, Chavis didn't do a very good job with him, or the other 11 Vols LBs he coached into the NFL over the past eight years.

PF was an offensive coach...he talked offense, defended the offense...constantly.

We'll see what you think of Chief next year in LSU. The guy is a good coach, and that has nothing to do with me talking to him, or anyone else.

I have talked to assistants on both sides of the ball -- I think Chavis was one of the most misjudged by other local media because he didn't jump in front of cameras or pat himself on the back very much at all.

He didn't care if the media liked him. He shot straight, and while not perfect, the two losing seasons UT had certainly could not be placed on the two defenses.

If you don't like him, fine. But don't say the only reason he got positive press was because a media member respected the job he did.

The numbers are there, and so is the national title.

Writer...don't let these guys get under your skin. The defense this year was great. And "say what you want" the Vol D did hold UF the best this season. The D was on the field the entire game and don't forget how many non-offensive points were scored by the Gators. I agree that Chavis IS a great coach. And to say he was in bed with local media is erroneous on all accounts. What makes me laugh is when people dog the "mustang" package, aka nickel. When we would get a comfortable lead and play the corners off 12-15 yds. people bitch about giving up 15 yd. out patterns...what's he supposed to do play bump-n-run and give up the home run fly pattern and let them back in the game? The lack of football knowlege within this fan base is staggering...and it always seems to be those who bitch the loudest and maroon the coaching staff. I wasn't happy with our situation the last couple of years, but it certainly wasn't because of Cheif. That I'm sure of. The lack of passion, accountablity, and chemistry among players and coaches alike was the problem and something needed to be done. This routine of constant finger-pointing has become tiresome and we would do well to come together as a fan base and give our support to the new staff. When things go wrong next season (and trust me there will be times when they do) maybe some should try thinking before blurting out baseless criticisms and slandering. But this is just one man's opinion, I don't think anyone is listening anyway.

Did you catch former Vol Tim Irwin, 14 year NFL career, comments on the Sports Mammal Friday about the Mustang Package, holes in the middle of the zones, and our inability to stop third and longs? Get a clue. Chavis was given a pass, consistently by Griff because he was an inside source. The guy can coach, but doesn't walk on water...

Griff,

You guys became WAYYYYYY to close with this staff this relationship clouded your ability to report on the game. Look at the numbers since 2001. I guess the 1998 championship is a FREE PASS in your mind to allow this previous staff to coach into perpetuity ???

What about Chavis v Nebraska when he had NFL talent and they sliced through UT like a knife through butter - twice. Air Force ran up & down on UT - those Peach Bowls were stellar.

Will you comment and judge the new staff compared to pre 2001 or post 2001 ???

Chavis is a good coach, and did a great job in 2008, but he several marginal years - to say the least.

MOVE ON !!!

We had the best 1st and 2nd down defense in the country. Too bad they get that pesky 3rd down.

I think there are 2 versions of Chavis. The first is when he has a front four that can get pressure, he can throw a serious D at anyone in the country. The second Chavis is when the front four can't get pressure, he seems to play too soft, and well then you get 3rd and Chavis.

(Of course I think there are a lot of coaches that do well when the front four can get pressure.)

I think he will do well at LSU if for no other reason than the man-beasts on D line they seem to get down there every year.

Yeah right; That Mayo lead Chavis gem of a defense was hiddeous in 2007. Chief "coached 'm up" allowing the Cal Berkley Bears to score 45, Florida 59, Alabama 41, and KY 50...

You were his water boy last year. Short memory ???

The only thing that upsets me is when people spin history their way.....and it's not accurate.

You go through the numbers and find me another SEC defense that ranked in the top 3 in the league 9 of the last 12 years.....

There wasn't one.

And when you're looking at all those high scores against UT, take into account how many were special teams scores, how many were defensive scores or real short fields produced by a woeful offense

Chavis can coach -- whether I like him, hate him, or you like him or hate him.

As for the source stuff, I haven't been on the UT beat in three years, and if you'll notice, I haven't written a story on Chavis in three years. When I was on the beat, Chief didn't give me scoop -- he gave me football related stuff about packages, defenses, opposing personnel. I'm an Xs and Os sports reporter -- I prefer that to chasing traffic tickets -- but sometimes those other things are a part of the job.

I do national magazine stuff, TV stuff, radio stuff and had done freelance stuff for the AJC on UT football....but I don't need Chavis as a source for anything.

Hooker plays that stuff up on radio as a joke.....because Chief disliked most media members.

I appreciate and even encourage readers questioning everything they read on the internet -- but jeez, you guys come up with some outrageous conspiricies about me
