Will our basketball Vols make the Final Four or will our Football Vols make a BCS game this year? Which is the best bet?

Wow, tough one. No matter how good you are at Bball, making the FF is a real accomplishment because so much is unknown going into it, there's your tourney draw to consider, and you have to best 63 other teams (64 if you include the play-in game loser).

Getting into a BCS game means you have to basically win your conference or come clase. And the competition to do that in the SEC is, well, legendarily fierce.

I'm going to have to go with BCS simply because the gauntlet to be run in March/April is so unpredictable at this point whereas, in football, my feeling is that if you win 2 out of 3 against Florida, UGA, and South Carolina, then you are probably the SECE champ and therefore one victory and 60 minutes away from a BCS game.

I think the roundball will be kinder to us Vol fans this year. The pigskin will take some unkind bounces this year I am afraid.

I think the chances of either happening are very remote, but if I had to choose one it would be basketball.

Vols still lack a dominant big man in BB.
For football, the vols would probably have to go at least 10-2 in the regular season with a long streak of wins to end the season in order to get an at large BCS slot.

Probably will be Florida and LSU getting the two BCS spots for the SEC.

I think our basketball team is better, but I agree with LG (it pains me to say that) in that it is much harder to make it to the final four compared to making a BCS game.

I would say we have a better shot at the BCS.

I would be upset if we at least didn't improve one round this time... I would say our better shot is bball.

I don't think it's even an argument, I think the chances of the basketball team getting to the Final Four are much greater than the football team getting to the BCS. You guys keep mentioning that we don't have a dominant big man, we don't need a dominant big man!!! We went to the Sweet 16 last year and were up by 20 on the National Runner-up without a dominant big man. We have played two seasons without a dominant big man and I don't think we'll need one this season. The type of system Pearl runs doesn't require a dominant center to succeed.

I think the football team's chances of making the BCS are very slim. The road games we have this year are very tough and if we happen to make it to Atlanta in December, we'll have another very difficult game in a place where our football (and basketball, for that matter) team struggles every time we show up in. The question marks on the football team are MUCH greater and much more glaring than the bball team. Yes, it is very difficult to be playing your best at the end of the season, but it's also very difficult to finish in the top 2 of the SEC and be in the BCS.

Just my opinion, but I think it's definitely basketball.

and we lost that 20 pt lead because the other team did have a dominant big man, and our outside game went ice cold......

bball in the tourney is about matchups, plain and simple. CBP will do fine at exploiting them with the talent we will have on the court this year. if the team chemistry is there, the sky is the limit.

what would a big man have done about that? dumping it down to a big guy was asking to get it slapped back in your face by Oden. The best thing to do against a team with a guy like Ohio St. is exactly what we did, take it to the outside and hope we're shooting well, which is what we were doing until the 2nd half. Having a big guy like we do in Chism allows us to pull that big guy outside and open up lanes in the middle. I think our team is fine like it is without a dominant big guy and can make a Final Four run with the right matchups in the tournament.

i didn't say that our game plan was wrong. i agree, we did exactly what we had to do to stay in that game and have a chance to win. no argument.

in the end though, the match up of oden against our vacant middle, proved to be the matchup that won the game for them.

that's all.

not true. we quit being aggressive in an effort to slow the game, got nervous and never regained any aggressiveness / poise.

i seem to remember Oden having a decent defensive game against us as well.

we did what we were supposed to do. we played our game plan, and it almost won the game for us. when our outside game started to fail, and we didn't hit 3 after 3 after 3, that's when OSU got back in it with Conley leading the way offensively and at the end of the game, Oden's defense was also a contributing factor...

Pulling a Florida.... FB NC, BB NC. They can't keep the upperhand!

Actually, if one were to chart out the schools that might be able to do that this year, only UT and Louisville would seem to have even a prayer at the extra impossibly rare double NC.

For my money, it isn't going to happen again for a long time. If ever.

we came out of the half and dropped back on D, removing all pressure from Conley. Freshmen struggle in big games at crunch time and we backed off. We handed the initiative to them, they took it and ran. Oden certainly impacted the game and our 3 shooting went cold, as is to be expected at pucker time, but I think the game went out the door with our assertiveness.

As much as I despise pappy, I think he's right on this one. We were not nearly as aggressive defensively for the majority of the second half. Even worse, it had us playing tentative offensively for at least several possessions that I can remember. The start of the second half was a recipe for disaster.
