Film Study: Get Tennessee while you can

Good read, especially if you're like me, trying to pass the time at work today trying to get to game day tomorrow.

Although the Vols will lose some talent (most notably senior linebacker A.J. Johnson), if you take into account the wealth of talent they have returning, meshed with the haul they’ll be pulling in recruiting, you may very well be looking at next season’s eastern division champs.

The rapid rise of both Mississippi State and the University of Mississippi has provided a blueprint for programs to climb out of its current doldrums: be in possession of a dynamic QB, strengthen the interior of your defensive line and have a coaching staff that can routinely out scheme its opponents.

The Vols most aptly fit that description, in the eastern division of the Southeastern Conference, if you take into consideration what they have returning meshed with what they are bringing in.

There’s big things happening for the Orange and White.

I agree, but the nega's are gonna roast the coaches scheming part! We'll be a power in the next year or two.

Sometimes you win with an abundance of talent. Sometimes you win with superior coaching. Things get real interesting when you combine the two.

S.E.C. East Champs all depends on how much talent Mullens has at Florida. If he is void of talent, then we might win the East. If he has talent on his roster and can coach them up, then we will likely not be the East Champs.

Mullen is at Mississippi State...

We've had excellent player talent for decades and decades but been missing the on field generals to lead them.

That's why Saban has been so dominant.

With the recruiting classes Butch and his coaches are pulling in to Tennessee. Butch will be dominant. You will see. He is building it for the long haul. We will not have any of those recruiting classes when we don't recruit any O-linemen. (Dooley in 2012)

On a weekly basis we’re reminded of just how great of a job University of Tennessee head coach Butch Jones is doing in just his second year of restoring his historic program.

While a 3-5 record may not reflect such a proclamation on the surface, when you view the job in totality it’s highly evident. Jones’ ability to recruit, combined with his vast knowledge of Xs and Os, makes Tennessee a tough out for anyone it opposes.

The Vols have been highly competitive despite the murderer’s row of a schedule they’ve faced this season: Oklahoma, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama immediately come to mind (the latter of which jumped out to a 27-0 lead before my wife could get dinner properly started).

But in typical Vols’ fashion they battled back — giving a glimpse of what’s in store for next season behind, hopefully, newly minted starting quarterback Josh Dobbs.

Although the Vols will lose some talent (most notably senior linebacker A.J. Johnson), if you take into account the wealth of talent they have returning, meshed with the haul they’ll be pulling in recruiting, you may very well be looking at next season’s eastern division champs.

Butch may have a vast knowledge of x's and o's but right now I'm not convinced. Gotta win big games, which I expect him to do soon.

We need to win tomorrow to generate some momentum and a "can do" attitude in our players. They know the most brutal part of the schedule is over, and that while 3 of the 4 remaining games are by no means cupcakes, they are about on the same level as us (middle to lower part of the pack in the SEC).

These are the kind of games we MUST win in order to turn the corner and establish a winning culture. With Dobbs at QB, I firmly believe we have a good shot at running the table and going to a decent bowl game....not just barely making it to bowl eligibility.

That would show the players and recruits that this team is indeed on the road back to the Pinnacle of SEC.

Eastern division take over. Now I love my vols but taking over the east next year isn't a realistic goal.

Not necessarily. I'm not saying we could completely dominate every East team, but we could win it with the level of talent we'll have.

A goal is what you aim for and when you reach it, you set the next goal higher, and so on. Eastern division title is not to lofty of a goal.
