Film Guy does JA

Nico had elite touch early in the season. His crossing route passes were perfect and in stride. As the season progressed, his touch and timing got worse and worse. The ability is there but he hasn’t lived up to it.

If JA can hit on those long passes this year, we can easily be 10-2. We usually have several of those chances a game and we just didn’t capitalize on them.

I guess the biggest concern is the short window for mastering the offense
I have a feeling, at least early in the year if JA starts, we will see a slightly faster and simpler offense. The goal will be to get JA and the WRs in a groove, then we will add a touch of complexity through the year if he starts doing well.

Really what Hooker did in 22 was not rocket science. He checked all the reads quickly, then started running. His success in our offense was that his internal clock and pocket presence were really good. He had this instinct on when to run that made him a threat to defenses.

Hoping Aguilar can be the same as this film shows he has more promise than I thought.

Two questions remain:
Does JA have pocket presents and can he get us to a playoff birth?
1. I suppose we’re about to find out. Done if his tale is decent all while playing with inferior talent.

2. Nico in no way shape or form took us to the playoffs. Fact of the matter is he was a bottom tier SEC QB. If we get average play we’ve upgraded.

3. I very much enjoy Christmas presents, but I have no pocket presence myself.

Nico looked great in one game…Chattanooga. And I’ll have to say, he looked like a Heisman winner in that game.

Once the competition level increased from that, however, he was a game manager at best…who produced very little.

I suspect that we will get much more production from the QB position next season…no matter who wins the job.

I am a little more optimistic after watching the video. I think one advantage is we can scramble him more. Last year I think we held Nico back as we were afraid to damage the golden goose but we just have JA a year and I say keep defenses honest and run him. His 40 time is around 5 seconds which is not bad.

He just has to be enough of a running threat to force the D to shift a little bit, opening up some throwing lanes that would not be available otherwise. Again, apples to oranges, but that was the secret sauce for Hooker. He knew when to tuck and run keeping the defenses on their heels.

TheFilmGuy shows that Joey has some of that in him already.

The fact he has to stay in LA until mid-June is very concerning. Seems it would be worth it to fly Halzle and a receiver out there for a couple of weeks to work with him.
Good idea, never thought about in person personal training may be worth it. Especially with the money involved in college football

I too feel better after watching this. I think the floor for QB production this year is what Nico was last year and that the ceiling is higher than it was with Nico.

I agree with you. I don’t think we have a “Dillon Sampson” on the team, to open up the big downfield plays as much, but 23 should have 2-3 a game that are open.

FL and Bama were won in spite of Nico

Liked the film study. JA works through progressions, anticipates open receivers, and has a lot of self confidence. On the down side, he frequently throws while falling away, making the ball sail and he has a LOT of self confidence, attempting throws that he probably shouldn’t.

I am excited to see who wins the job JA or Merk and will be all in for whoever it is.
It did seem like every throw he made he was leaning backwards.

Serious question - does anyone know the rules around a player NOT being on campus after the portal window closes?

I know they have to be enrolled for the Spring Semester and complete classes for that semester.
But with just about every school offering some kind of online curricula these days, would it be possible for a player to still be enrolled at a school they were leaving but not physically present at that school?

Sorry for the long, run-on question - my meaning is could JA be enrolled at UCLA and complete the Spring Semester with online classes?
Of course my follow-up question would be, does anything prevent him from coming to Knoxville and working with the S&C staff during the Spring Semester?

Like Ainge said today- if AJ does well, UT will do better. If he doesn’t do well, UTcwill do worse.

I love the in-depth analysis in April.

Analyzing film during the off season is what people do, but thanks for commenting 😄

Yeah, he’s got some instinct for sure already.. this is one of the better analysis guys I’ve seen on here 😂
