Here's some talking points that I'd like to discuss.
Filling Needs:
(Offense): Malone, Dobbs, Weisman, Kamara, and Croom are big losses, but the maturation of players like Calloway, Johnson, Dormady/Guarantano, Fils-Aime, Chandler will be key. The OL looses only Weisman and the 1st time in years we have some depth. Last years class of Johnson, Niehaus and Tatum to do along with this years signees of Smith, Locklear, and Calbert gives us a good nucleus for development by Wells and Mahoney (if he's retained).
Chandler is polished and will gain experience behind Kelly. Two players need to step up out of Fils-Aime, Coleman, Chandler, and Jordan. We'll need three that's ready to go in Sept.
Out of the WR's, Byrd and Johnson, and Calloway gained valuable experience last season as Freshmen. Smith and Jennings will require others to step up and be ready to contribute. Murphy, Jones, and Palmer will be looked to for help at this production thin position.
(Defense): Was atrocious period. The will to read, shed, fill and tackle weren't there as a unit. I know it was Shoops 1st year, but hopefully we get that ship righted this year. We are losing Foreman, Lewis, Vereen, Reeves-Maybin, Barnett, and Sutton, but only a few of those guys have been really productive for us. The latter will be missed on and off the field. Coach Shoop really needs to get some productivity out of Phillips. To me he's not lived up to his potential. Bain will be improved and showed some promise when called upon. Butcher and Johnson should be healthy and ready to contribute. Mixon, Kongbo, Vickers, KMac, and Tuttle, will have the task for getting Crosby, Bennett, Butler, and Thaxton ready to go. Those guys will also benefit from Taylor and Picou.
Our LB corps should improve with Reid, Ignont, and Page. Jumper and Kirkland need some help and fast. Reid and Page are fast, slideline to sideline Lb's that aren't afraid to hit.
The backend should be reinvigorated by Coach Warren. Foreman and Sutton are gone, but we are experienced with Buchanan, Martin and Mosley, Gaulden, Abernathy, KellyJr, and I'm anxious to see the development of LaBruzza, Bailey, Sham, and Gray. Competition develops improvement.
