I read monday's sports column in the Knoxville News Sentinel and saw a neat article about how we are competing with USC for recruiting now. (by the way, i tried to find a link on the website, no luck...post please if anyone finds it!) It then went on, of course, about how UT is so closely connected to USC thanks to Coach Lane Kiffin. But what was neat to read was the fact that the writer was coming up with ideas about kinda twisting both USC and UT traditons together in order to please recruits and to spite certian teams.

The first example was having The Pride of the Southland Band play USC's fight song "Fight for ol' SC." Then, all we would do is change "SC" with "UT". This, the writer mentioned, would be great to do at the UCLA game this year. Just to spite them after we win. :) But how this would please recruits, let alone the fans, I don't really see.

The next example was having Davy Crocket ditch the Power T flag and ride a white horse across the endzone. THAT, is just stupid my friends...:birgits_giggle:

that would NEVER work. first, it's just stupid (as you've already pointed out). B, didn't we get rid of the tennessee walking horses because they were damaging the field? how would this be much different.

i hope they don't start ruing our traditions just bc they can (i don't think they will bc kiff knows how much tradition we have and he respects it, i think).

I don't know if it was satire...but that article was most definitely a joke.

That was truly one of the goofiest articles I've ever read from John Adams, even though I believe his intention was sort of a "tongue in cheek" piece.

Actually, the horse WOULD be UT tradition. A walking horse use to strut up and down the sidelines at the beginning of the game and (if I remember my notes correctly) at each touchdown. It was the inspiration for the POTS Drum Major's high-step pregame kickoff. So I could see Davy Crockett on a white Tennessee Walking Horse, but I'd rather not.

UT tradition should first start out with winning, which is our tradition to start with. Wearing black jerseys, running on the field with a horse and guy dressed in a coonskin hat will not effect the play of our players, only change the attitude of our traditional fans. The players on the field are more worried about the game and not the pregame, so none of the other "traditional" nonsense really matters at this point, as pointed out by CLK.
