I saw a couple of people from practices mention Medley was having some struggles recently. Practice is different from a game and this is all just hypothetical bit Medley has not proven to be the most reliable kicker up to this point and I believe that is putting it mildly. Last year I felt that Jones put too much faith in him, especially after a couple of big misses in big games. He would send out the kicking unit on fourth and two from the 32 when Medley had already missed two from that exact range.

So my question is this. How many misses does Medley get before we see Laszlo or Jackson Morris? It's not like we would be recruiting from frat row. Both these guys can kick and Jackson Morris looks dang good on tape. An yes I know Medley was a highly regarded kicking prospect coming out of highschool.

My opinion would be give Medley a short leash. We have missed opportunities to win games due to missed field goals by him on more than one occasion. I understand Butch trying to instill confidence in him as it is a very mental position, but at some point you have to move on.

What do you guys think it would take for us to see a change?

How confident are you in Medley this year?

If you had to guess who is the next guy up?

We seen and heard the same things about Palardy for a long time. Butch is big on special teams, I think he'll get Medley right before the season starts. That being said some of his misses were tough last year for even the best college kickers.

Some food for thought from an old SDS article.

"If Aaron Medley, had made all of his field goal attempts this season, Tennessee might be undefeated. In Tennessee’s loss to Oklahoma, Medley missed a 48-yarder in the third quarter that would have given Tennessee a 17-point lead. Against Florida, Medley missed a 55-yard, game-winning field goal attempt on the last play of the game. Against Arkansas, Medley missed a 28-yarder that would have given Tennessee a 17-7 lead and kept the momentum in Tennessee’s favor. In the loss to Alabama, Medley missed three kicks – from 43 yards out and two 51-yarders. Though it’s hard to blame Medley for Tennessee’s 3-4, his missed field goals have killed Tennessee’s momentum and given opposing offenses good field position."

That 28 yarder against Arkansas really hurt. Amazing how much a kicker can influence a season.

Yeah I agree it's hard to hold anything over fifty against him. I really have a problem with Jones continuing to call for field goals in situations where (to me) it was pretty obvious our chances of converting were much higher than Medleys's chances of hitting. 47 is not a very impressive long for an sec kicker.

The Arkansas kick and the 43 yard attempt against Bama are inexcusable. Anything over 50 is tough. He had the leg for the Florida kick though, just missed it by a dark and curly. Those kicks against Bama that he missed, if I remember correctly weren't even kind of close.

Agreed. What killed me last year was the Oklahoma game inside the two or 3 and we kicked the FG. You go for that. Make them drive the field for points. Medley's safe range is witching 40-45 yards. Anything longer and it's s crapshoot IMO. Not for leg strength but accuracy.

Yeah lets speculate how many kicks our kicker is going to miss. Hey while we are at it, why not speculate how many INTs Dobbs will throw or how many sacks Barnett will miss.

The change needs to come from Butch... If it's 4th and 3 from our opponent's 34, I hope we have reached a point where we show some confidence in our improved offensive line and senior QB and go for it. No more 51 yard field goal attempts (unless it's an end of the half desperate attempt).

I think having Medley do a lot of kicks outside his range may mess with his confidence and that could sometimes be adverse to his performance on what should be his gimme kicks. Sometimes, though, (the FL game), he's our last hope. We put him in a situation where he could be a hero but the odds may not be in his/our favor.

That's why all coaches hate kickers.... It's not the X's and O's that keep the coaches up at night, it's the little guy who usually can't run, tackle, block, etc... the kicker...

40 and under he is almost automatic. Anything further and it's pretty much a coin toss.

IMO, Medley very possibly will cost us one game. Like some of the others above, I really hope we don't attempt anything over 45 yds, unless it is in a blowout game to give Medley some confidence, even at the risk of being accused of running up the score.

I think kicking cost us 1 or 2 of the games last season.

Going 11-1 this year. Will beat LSU in SEC finals.

Actually, Medley's safe range is anything under 40 yards....he's been really good from there. But once he gets 40 yards and beyond, it's anybody's guess. I can understand beyond 50, where he's about 0-3 or 0-4 lifetime. But he's also been very bad 40-49 and that just has to change this year IMO.

Other than that last one, hes been very reliable inside 40, no?

Ummmmm did we just forget what CBJ'S was able to do with Palardy? I'm not worried about the kicking game at all.

Actually there have been reports saying the opposite. There was one report that mentioned 3 kicks and everyone has attached themselves to it instead.

He did it with Palardy in very short order, within about 6 months.....Palardy went from a mess to a strength, perhaps the MVP of the team within a season. We've now seen the same Medley 2 years running. I feel great about our Special Teams overall, but our place kicking with Medley is very much a concern and the weak link at this point until he proves otherwise, no doubt about it.

I'm not so sure that "Palardy was (an) MVP"...

Or Tennessee was still sucking so bad on offense...that Palardy was a bright spot for some kind of points.
