Ferguson Riots

No one is more racist than government

crime in Ferguson has been declining for the last decade and a half, approaching the national average. At the same time, while blacks make up two-thirds of the population, they are twice as likely to be stopped by police as whites, accounting for 93 percent of arrests and 92 percent of searches. This despite cops finding contraband on 34 percent of whites stopped but only 22 percent of blacks, according to a racial profiling report from the Missouri's attorney general last year.

I have mixed reactions/emotions to this.

On the one hand one wonders if it is human nature for cops to buy into the stereotypes so prevalent in our society, just as much as anyone else.

On the other hand, if he is patrolling in an area of town that is basically comprised entirely of black residents, it seems wrong to assume that he stopped the two because they were black. Anyone stopped, for any reason, in that neighborhood could make such a claim.

Those critical of the police here have cast it as the two teens walking "along" the street. That seems hardly reason to stop someone. but if they were walking in the middle of it, or far enough into the roadway that it would impede traffic, seems reasonable that the officer should ask them to move over to the sidewalk.

From there, of course, we know that accounts diverge sharply. I cannot say I am surprised that the friend makes it sound like Brown was doing absolutely nothing wrong. Its human nature I think to put it that way.

I just find it tough on the front end to understand why, if Brown was posing no threat at all, and not pushing the officer back in the car, not grabbing for his weapon -- as the friend says -- the officer would be pulling him into the car and firing his gun in a closed space like that. Very odd, especially given how this started.

I'm not even saying that any of the officers are racist, my opinion is that the criminal justice system creates incentives to profile. Institutional racism, not necessarily racist individuals in government.

I think that's true but not because government "wants" it. Just because it reflects society wide stereotyping.

Wrong. It's because those in law enforcement and criminal justice system need to find and convict those who break the law to further their careers, and minorities/poor are easier targets.

Maybe because they're the overwhelming majority of law breakers, it's got nothing to do with the color of their skin.

Trying to figure out why profiling is even being discussed. The guys were suspects for shop lifting

Because there are riots in Ferguson, and that information I posted helps us understand the racial climate in the city.

Just cover your ears and say "la la la" if it's something you don't want to hear.

Did you miss the part about whites having a higher rate of contraband possession in Ferguson?

How come white people don't loot and riot every time a white guy is shot or arrested by the cops? Hmmmmm

Probably because most white folks don't care. If I see a white person involved in an altercation with police I automatically assume they made some poor choice(s) in life.
