Feels like 98

It doesn't feel like 98 to me. I think we can win it all but things will have to fall in to place, no injuries, full effort every game no matter opponent. And unlike 98, we have a target on our backs. 98 was not expected to be a championship run, Peyton had just left and even though most expected a good year, not a championship. Most thought Peyton was the best chance of achieving that. What happened while he was here, we relied too much on him and not as much of a team effort as it was in 98. I'm hoping and wishing a NC this year, but let's take it one game at a time. GBO

That was what they did in 98, taking one game at a time. No injuries? Jamal Lewis got injured early, but Henry and Stephens stepped up. Had that team suffered more key injuries than that? Who knows?

This years team seems deeper across the board. So, if injuries happen we are not limited in options. Main difference I see between 98 and now? Fans. Seems many are too focused on the destination, and they will miss enjoying the view of the journey.

Injuries: Watched the 1999 Fiesta Bowl about a year ago on YouTube. One thing that jumped out to me was how many players went down in that very game. Goodrich, the most notable. Five or 6 others, and some for FSU too. It was a slugfest, but both teams just trotted out another athlete. That's what a roster has to be to win it all. Hopefully we have that now.

Back to Goodrich, who was shadowing Warrick on every play. Griffin & Johnson held Warrick to 0 yards in the 2nd half. Magical. Also, is an indictment on that OC named "Helen Hunt" iirc :) who never got the ball in the best playmaker in the nations hands at all after the pic 6. Unreal.

Journey: This man is 100% correct youngens. Don't miss the enjoyment of the journey while being fixated on results. You'll be glad you did one day.

When I read the title, I thought the OP was going to talk about the heat index in Knoxville.:)

Hmm not sure how this season feels like '98. In '98 we were coming off a blow out loss to Nebraska. Peyton, Nash, and Little were gone. The team was ranked around 15th in the nation and there was very little if any buzz around the team. The whole season was supposed to be a rebuilding year.

Beat me to it..I was about to say the same thing...I didn't expect anything good from the 98 team..Figured maybe 8-9 wins at best...Luckly it was a magical season...By the way the song on that video sucks...blousy blousy?!?...WTF does that mean? :eek:lol:

I've heard a few say that "this season feels like 98". While I certainly am hoping for 98' results, I think that the comparison is not accurate.

In 98' the season began with a gigantic double "black hole". The losses of Peyton Manning and Leonard Little. Plus others out to the NFL. The mood was more like "We have lost to UF for 5 straight seasons and we just had our best team ever while they rebuilt at QB ... and still lost. We just got our a$$e$ handed to us in the last game in Miami by the National Champions.

Now, were going to "settle" for an offense run by an unproven dual-threat QB. PM's success had (still does to this day for some, btw) convinced many that the Majors/Fulmer/Cutcliff scheme was based on a pocket passer. This is categorically untrue, but the idea was that we would settle for what we had at QB. Bottom line, UT was going to be good, but down somewhat.

While maybe not considered "rebuilding", from our recent top-5 viewpoint it was to be a "down year". Plus the Gators loomed even better than a year before. Therefore, we were on a "downward trend" to start 98', from the lofty places Fulmer had us for the 3 previous seasons.

But, as Phil used to say, "that's why you play the game". Our defense was improved enough to carry our offense early. Plus, in this year, the breaks finally happened in the right places in order to give us the chance to win.

Syracuse - 4th Down PI penalty / Hall's clutch winner
UF - 4 TOs (one on a sure TD) / Missed FG
Arky - 21pt comeback / Stumble & Fumble
FSU - The Rooster / Pick 6 / Punter pancakes Warrick

So, while 98' became magical from early doubts. I would equate the atmosphere for this season more like the 1997 pre-season where the mindset was "it's now or never".

Wouldn't preseason of 2005 be a better comparison?

I was thinking 2005 too. 1993 also came to mind. Both teams the season before those seasons were young, let opportunities slip away, and wrapped up the season with big bowl wins. Lets hope this season is better than both of those two seasons. While the 1993 season wasn't a wash like 2005 it also wasn't a championship year.

Sounds like the singers were on some dope. Turrible music. I'm pretty sure they weren't even saying real words for most of it.

I won't give these guys too much crap about their music. Back when I was their age, disco was still popular. There was also punk music getting started, which makes this almost tolerable. And Hee Haw was still on TV. Yeah there was a little talent, but some of them sounded like cats getting strangled. And if you watched too much? Now you know how the suicide hotline got started. But I digress.

Main reason bad music is tolerated and enjoyed? At that age, many will just listen to whatever music that will lead to getting laid. It's a theory.

This is the best vols pump up video I've seen so far this year. Just have to get through to the 2 minute mark roughly.

As a fan of rap... This song and ones like it are despicable and gives the whole genre a bad rap.... Pun intended

It actually feels like 97. Let's hope we don't get disappointed like we did then.

Really does feel like 98:

Dobbs: Tee Martin
Jalen Hurd: Jamal Lewis
Alvin Kamara: Travis Henry
Preston Williams: Peerless Price
Josh Malone: Cedrick Wilson
JRM: Al Wilson
DKJr.: Raynoch Thompson
Derek Barnett: Shaun Ellis
Cam Sutton: Dwayne Goodrich

I'm not necessarily saying that each of these guys are just like their comparison, but having that many stalwarts in so many position groups, the combination of leadership and talent, and not to mention both our team and the 98 team went into the season preseason ranked #10 ;)
