I've heard a few say that "this season feels like 98". While I certainly am hoping for 98' results, I think that the comparison is not accurate.
In 98' the season began with a gigantic double "black hole". The losses of Peyton Manning and Leonard Little. Plus others out to the NFL. The mood was more like "We have lost to UF for 5 straight seasons and we just had our best team ever while they rebuilt at QB ... and still lost. We just got our a$$e$ handed to us in the last game in Miami by the National Champions.
Now, were going to "settle" for an offense run by an unproven dual-threat QB. PM's success had (still does to this day for some, btw) convinced many that the Majors/Fulmer/Cutcliff scheme was based on a pocket passer. This is categorically untrue, but the idea was that we would settle for what we had at QB. Bottom line, UT was going to be good, but down somewhat.
While maybe not considered "rebuilding", from our recent top-5 viewpoint it was to be a "down year". Plus the Gators loomed even better than a year before. Therefore, we were on a "downward trend" to start 98', from the lofty places Fulmer had us for the 3 previous seasons.
But, as Phil used to say, "that's why you play the game". Our defense was improved enough to carry our offense early. Plus, in this year, the breaks finally happened in the right places in order to give us the chance to win.
Syracuse - 4th Down PI penalty / Hall's clutch winner
UF - 4 TOs (one on a sure TD) / Missed FG
Arky - 21pt comeback / Stumble & Fumble
FSU - The Rooster / Pick 6 / Punter pancakes Warrick
So, while 98' became magical from early doubts. I would equate the atmosphere for this season more like the 1997 pre-season where the mindset was "it's now or never".
