You know....I have to wonder how we and this job are being perceived by other coaches right now? This hysteria over Gruden clearly shows that fans consider Gruden to be the be all end all to this coaching search. Anyone else hired will be viewed as a disappointment before he coaches a single game.
Many have stated, and I agree, the new guy will have to be sold on this job. So my question is how you sell any candidate that they're a second, third, or fourth choice? For example, how do you sell Patterson to get him to leave his current job where he's adored to come to UT where he will always be viewed as a fall back guy to Gruden? And before anyone says back up the Brinks truck, those days are over. We've seen example after example of big name schools being turned down and having to settle for an up and comer or coordinator.
Have to think the fans attitude and behavior can be a hindrance to selling this job to a "name" coach. UT fans can be their own worst enemy at times. This Gruden hysteria does UT absolutely no good when we are trying to find a great coach and convince him this is a job worth uprooting the family and moving to. So when we end up taking a so called Google coach or coordinator, let's not be so fast to blame Currie. The Internet twits on this board and others like it have done him no favors.
