Favorite/Most Despised Announcers

I personally don't think the ladies belong on the field or in the booth! I think those roles should be reserved for those who have played the game!

JMO .... I don't like listening to Holly Rowe. She's a waste of everybody's time.
But they keep trotting her out there like she has important questions to ask about the game.

Maybe we should stand up a poll - might be fun to see the results.

A post from Saturday got me thinking...who are your most and least favorite announcers over the years?

Personally, I'm a fan of the Greg McElroy/Joe Tessitore combo. Joe's voice is exciting and he seems even-keeld for both teams. Greg also seems fair to both sides and treats Vol fans respectfully.

I find Chris Fowler to be in the same league as Joe Tessitore (or I guess maybe it should be said, Tessitore is in the same class as Fowler) but Herbstreit is not as unbiased as the others. He's a bit of a baby and, even though he tries not to...he's a Ohio State homer.

I miss Brent Musberger - I know a lot of people dont' like him but to me - his is a voice of college football.

Gary Danielson is my least favorite ever. Whenever TN goes up against a ranked opponent, it's never because TN is playing well - it's always because the other team is doing something wrong. He's a jerk on the air through-and-through. I always turn his voice off and listen to the radio broadcast - even if they aren't matching up.

What say you guys?
Ron Franklin Mike Gottfried combo. Days gone by.

espn is the most woke & PC bunch ever. They'd Hire

Just to prove their wokeness.

I think that Brad Nessler and Sean McDonough are probably the two best play by play guys right now. I’ve always thought Brock Huard was an outstanding color guy. Unfortunately he’s been relegated to the B team on Fox. I’ve never had any real issue with Danielson. I’ve always said that he’s a lot like Bill Raftery. When they stick to actually analyzing the game, their terrific. It’s when they sidetracked with all their nonsense that they become a hindrance to the broadcast.
DANIELSON ALWAYS FAVORS THE OTHER TEAM, HE HAS SOMETHING AGAINST TENNESSEE. TODD BLACKLEDGE IS ALMOST AS BAD. I WAS TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER, BUT HE CALLS CAMES LIKE HE WAS BEAT BY TENNESSEE & STILL HOLDS A GRUDGE.

Favorites:

Before Brad Nessler went to CBS, I thought he and Todd Blackledge were the best announcing team. I still like Nessler, but his partner could stand to be replaced (see below).

Now, it would probably Sean McDonough and Blackledge, although Saturday's game with the Vols would not rank as one of their best. I think McDonough is the best play-by-play announcer in the business.

I am honestly surprised at how good Greg McElroy is as an analyst. Being a Bama grad, I honestly didn't know what to expect. ;) He and Joe Tessitore work well together.

I also agree with others that Brock Huard is extremely underrated.

Least:

Gary Danielson, nuff said.

And for all the warranted criticism of Beth Mowlins, Tracy Wolfson's voice got on my nerves just about as much as Beth's. I'm glad she's away from the SEC.

One of the worst announcers in general IMO is Phil Simms on NFL games. He constantly states really obvious things as if he is dispensing some great wisdom. One that particularly stands out is "the reason you blitz is to sack the quarterback". No **** sherlock! lol
My wife always picks up on commander-obvious color: "They really need to convert this third down!"...uuuuhhhh isn't that normally the posture when it's third down? "The receivers need to catch the ball".....rrrriiiiggghhhtt and all this time I thought they were just decoys.

Beth Mowins is worst. Second worst. And still in the running for third worst. She's like Lou Holtz in drag.

This is a great post. Agree with everything. Brock is excellent. Love Sean McDonough. Nice person as well. Had a chance to meet him on a few occasions. Nessler solid too. I also really liked Ron Franklin and Gottfried doing the color back in the 90's .

I like all the legends…..nostalgia and all.

Keith Jackson
Verne Lundquist
Brent Musberger

Loved Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried.

Same for Nessler. McDonough is solid as well. Someone mentioned Huard, who I also think is excellent.

Fowler/Herbie —- meh. Musberger/Herbie far superior.

Terrible:

Mike Patrick
Mike Tirico
Mark Jones
Some I can’t even remember their names.

were one you forgot be Bob Kesling?

I think that jackass doing play-by-play for the TItans is the absolute WORST I've ever heard. He sounds arrogant and YELLS into the mic. Loves to hear himself.

Speaking of yelling into the mic, the PA at Neyland is HORRIBLE .... yelling "IT"S THIRD DOWN" at the top of his lungs. Dude, we all know it's third down, whether we're in the stadium or not.

I’ll give a non answer here…having grown up with Jack Buck and John Ward and having worked in radio for a while…it’s probably not fair for me to compare any other announcer to these two. I find it “annoying” at times when some broadcasters try to explain what I just witnessed for myself. I personally mute most games these days…however I do enjoy Dan McLaughlin and Brad Thompson on the Bally network doing Cardinal games.

If they work for ESPN I am not interested in listening to anything they have to say. They have an agenda against TN. They have run us down ever since Fulmer testified in the NCAA investigation against BAMA.
My favorite was John Ward.

CANNOT stand Tessitore. Keith Jackson as a favorite might show my age.

I don't know how you can have a despised announcer thread and not one person mention bob costas. That guy has done as much as to turn me off from NFL as roger goodell.

Surprisingly Jim Ross who calls wrestling matches for AEW did a great job calling Atlanta Falcons football games in 1992.

Several good announcers mentioned here in this thread. Someone I want to give a shout out to is Mike Patrick. He truly
made Sunday Night Football enjoyable to watch. I enjoyed his coverage of the college games as well.

Worst one hands down anywhere right now - Beth Mowlins !!!!

She should be applying for a refund on whatever journalism / communications degree she spent money to get.
Think your being a little hard on Beth. She tries hard & I have heard worse.
