Favorite Loss in Tennessee History

Just an off-season topic to get us through.

As tough as the 2007 SECCG loss was, I remember it rather fondly. I had met my future wife that year at UT and witnessed so many exciting games (including this one) with her. South Carolina (Lincoln's barely there field goal), big win over UGA, 4 overtime against UK, etc. In fact, Tennessee was the first team to make it to Atlanta having had more points scored against than for in SEC play.

In other words, we didn't have any business being there, but just found a way to win. At the start of the game, the Vols came out pumped and the defense was electric! The group I traveled with didn't think we had a chance, but at halftime, our team really had us believing. The int's ultimately did us in, but a team with obvious flaws gave everything they had and almost brought home an improbable SEC Championship. Keep in mind, they almost knocked off the would-be national champions that year.

As we left the game and got on the metro, there was a UT fan in overalls who sang all three verses to RockyTop while surrounded by UT and LSU fans. He got a big round of applause afterwards, and I remember thinking, "It's Great to Be a Tennessee Vol!"

If you had to pick one, what would be your favorite loss?

This. Greatest game I've watched that we lost.

Darn near pulled off a comeback.

I don't know if your memory goes back that far, but another one that would fall into this category was the 1968 Orange Bowl, which pitted 2nd-ranked Tennessee vs. 3rd-ranked Oklahoma. The Sooners raced out to a 19-0 halftime lead, only to see Tennessee come storming back with 24 second-half points. Karl Kremser's 43-yard field goal missed narrowly to the right and we lost 26-24.

My goodness. I should have seen this coming. Let me be more clear...

We're just busting your Vols here, OP, ala Goodfellas.
In the absence of actual football, a little ball busting goes a long way toward filling the void.
For the time being, just think of your Vol brethren as Volfellas.

At this very moment I'm watching Derek Mason on SEC network. He is talking about how the TN game last year was Vandy's coming out party. Apparently we lost to them and I missed it? I guess that's my favorite loss cause I thought we won ....

In 45 years as fan every loss hurt, when i was a kid i would cry, in my 20 and 30s i would shed a few tears if it was a loss to Florida or Bama, now in my 50s a tear or 2 will still come from a gut wrenching loss like to Florida last year, if we every loss a game and old TP accept it, you VOL NATION will know my old azz is 6 foot under the ground, i guess i take this football to serious, but all i can say is i was born a TENNESSEAN and by the GRACE OF GOD I WILL DIE A TENNESSEE VOL, GO VOLS BUCK BAMA MY FRIENDS.

Terry, your old a$$ don't live in Dallas, Texas. Heck, you just put in a new trailer like 3 years ago on that vacant lot right next to where your grand babies use to live. You're still living like a "toad" in DeKalb County. You need to straighten out Terra too. That feller she's been running with ain't no good, I'll tell ya. I seen umm both at the scrap yard like a month ago, and the peckerwood wouldn't even shake my hand. What do you make of that? He'll have her in prison before it's all said and done if you don't put and end to it. Vic been talking about you and yours like a dog as well. The 'One Armed Bandit' needs to come out in you, and you need to swiftly put an end to all of that nonsense that the Jessie feller is putting in your sweet baby Terra's gullible mind.

Got in late and read a few of the 1st posts and skipped to my post. In an attempt to not be grumpy, I've managed to block out such negative vibes from losses. None have ever benefited the VOLS or me. Things have happened as result of losses, that the VOLS my end up benefiting from once given enough time. The way Nebraska handed it to us back in the inaugural bowl coalition game, did put us to work in 1998, resulting in the National Championship, but also cost us a National Championship. I say just, win them all! GO VOLS!

It's tough none of them or the last one because there won't be anymore! I'm torn!!!

Good grief spicoli....:thud:

If I have to choose: Auburn 1988 because it was the last loss that launched us into a huge winning era! 0-6 start finished 5 wins in a row and then 11-1 next season. I was at Auburn for the game. We also kicked a lot of Auburn ass the night before and night after! Good grief it was crazy and fun.

OP, I've read through these posts and I know what you were meaning so don't take these other posters to heart man. I would have to go with the ND loss of '89.

2013 Georgia. We had no business being in hat game yet we took it to OT and were literally inches from winning. Great effort that day

Favorite loss?
Are you serious, Clark?
That's like asking what was my favorite miscarriage.

This. A bad win can at least be thrown off like drinking too much and boning a fat chick. A "favorite" loss is like Sophie's Choice, only you don't get to respect yourself years down the road for making the right one.

Yeah I agree. As much as I love the Vols I save the tears for real life. Never forget an interview I saw with Reggie White and reporter ask him the question "do you ever cry over a loss"? Reggie said "cry over a ball game ? NEVER...I figured its good enough for one if the best to ever play the game it's good for me too..,

My favorite loss? When Clint Stoerner lost the football in the pouring rain in Knoxville.

Asking what my favorite loss is.....well, that's about like asking which time I got kicked in the nuts was my favorite.
