Favorite Loss in Tennessee History

What a game!
To have a shot at the win against the No. 1 team on their field.
I could not believe my eyes when the Vols got the onside kick and actually brought it close enough to even kick it.
There was plenty to be proud about for the Big Orange that day.

Just an off-season topic to get us through.

As tough as the 2007 SECCG loss was, I remember it rather fondly. I had met my future wife that year at UT and witnessed so many exciting games (including this one) with her. South Carolina (Lincoln's barely there field goal), big win over UGA, 4 overtime against UK, etc. In fact, Tennessee was the first team to make it to Atlanta having had more points scored against than for in SEC play.

In other words, we didn't have any business being there, but just found a way to win. At the start of the game, the Vols came out pumped and the defense was electric! The group I traveled with didn't think we had a chance, but at halftime, our team really had us believing. The int's ultimately did us in, but a team with obvious flaws gave everything they had and almost brought home an improbable SEC Championship. Keep in mind, they almost knocked off the would-be national champions that year.

As we left the game and got on the metro, there was a UT fan in overalls who sang all three verses to RockyTop while surrounded by UT and LSU fans. He got a big round of applause afterwards, and I remember thinking, "It's Great to Be a Tennessee Vol!"

If you had to pick one, what would be your favorite loss?

Top 10 worst thread this calendar year.

No such thing as a good or favorite loss....even the close ones when Tennessee was a big dog hurt cause you know you let a chance get away.

A couple of ties aren't too bad in my memory . 1965 vs Alabama 7-7 on the defending national champs home field. 1968- 17-17 vs uga after time ran out. 20-20 vs Auburn in 1987.

Kentucky in 2011. Kept Bray from continuing to be an embarrassment for another month and pretty much sealed Dooley's fate.

Yeah this is a tough one. Maybe a close loss could be considered good but agree with above that moral victories are for Vandy fans.

No they're not. Moral victories are legitimate if you, or anyone else, can step outside that narrow minded view that "we are UT so we only celebrate wins". For example, last year Bama was clearly a superior team that we had no business being on the field with. Yet that game gave us an opportunity to play Dobbs and allow him to give us fans and the staff a glimpse of future things to come. Dobbs put up 20 on a superior Bama, something Shuler, Ainge, and Bray NEVER did. We lost, but if you can't find a positive in that game then you lack the concept of context, which is important when analyzing a team's progression from one season to the next.

Losing to Bama 12-10 in 2009 on a last second blocked FG attempt by Terrence Cody. Tennessee started both Sullins brothers in that game (two walk-ons who had no business starting on a SEC offensive line) versus 12 future NFL'ers on the Alabama 2-deep. That game, against an undefeated Alabama in Bryant-Denny Stadium, should've never been that close. Kiffy made Saban's sphincter tighten that afternoon.

BTW, Bama was a 14.5 point favorite that afternoon.

An occasional morale booster is great, like Dobb's emergence in the Bama game. I just mean that feeling warm and happy won't get us back to national prominence. Hey minus last year all we've really had is moral victories for like 4 years it's time for some w's.

I'm normally pretty optimistic, so I feel what you're saying.

I am a long time lurker in this community and don't really post too often, but I had to post something for this topic...

What the heck kind of question is that?

All I have to say right now.

There are very few losses for which I would consider watching a rebroadcast. One that stands out, however, because it was well-played, extremely exciting, high-scoring and we just fell short in our final comeback bid would be the 1990 game that Notre Dame won, 34-29. The following year, Notre Dame again scored 34 points but succumbed to the greatest comeback ever by an opponent on Notre Dame's home field in the "Miracle at South Bend."

This. Greatest game I've watched that we lost.

Darn near pulled off a comeback.

In 45 years as fan every loss hurt, when i was a kid i would cry, in my 20 and 30s i would shed a few tears if it was a loss to Florida or Bama, now in my 50s a tear or 2 will still come from a gut wrenching loss like to Florida last year, if we every loss a game and old TP accept it, you VOL NATION will know my old azz is 6 foot under the ground, i guess i take this football to serious, but all i can say is i was born a TENNESSEAN and by the GRACE OF GOD I WILL DIE A TENNESSEE VOL, GO VOLS BUCK BAMA MY FRIENDS.

Wow
